Description
The character known as Captain is a prominent antagonist in the Hellsing manga and its OVA adaptation, Hellsing Ultimate. He serves as the silent, stoic adjutant and personal bodyguard to the Major, the leader of the Millennium organization, a group of surviving Nazi vampires. Within the Millennium hierarchy, he holds the second-highest rank and is considered the organization's ultimate trump card, a role comparable to that of Alucard for the Hellsing Organization or Alexander Anderson for Iscariot. Unlike many other members of Millennium who became undead through artificial means, the Captain is a natural werewolf, a being thought to be extinct, which accounts for his unique and immense power.

The Captain's past remains largely shrouded in mystery, but his history is revealed through flashbacks and the prequel manga Hellsing: The Dawn. Over fifty years before the main events of the story, a young, fourteen-year-old Walter C. Dornez, alongside Alucard, attacked a Millennium research facility in Warsaw, Poland, during World War II. During this encounter, the Captain fought Walter, easily resisting the young prodigy's deadly wires and nearly choking him to death before being interrupted. He also kicked Alucard in half, causing the vampire to temporarily retreat. Later that same year, in December 1944, he participated in the infamous Malmedy massacre during the Battle of the Bulge. Following Germany's defeat, the Captain, along with the Major and other survivors, fled to South America, where they remained in hiding for over five decades to rebuild their strength. It is believed that during this period, he showed no signs of aging, indicating a form of biological immortality.

Personality-wise, the Captain is the most enigmatic figure in the series. He is characterized by his profound silence, never speaking a single word throughout the entire narrative, and his perpetually expressionless, stoic face. His most significant emotional displays are rare but telling: a look of surprise when Alucard unleashes his full power and a final, wide, joyful smile in his last moments as he dies. Despite serving a brutal and fanatical Nazi organization, he frequently demonstrates a sense of chivalry and a curious aversion to unnecessary killing. When confronted by Heinkel Wolfe, he deliberately shot her through the cheek rather than killing her, and even tossed her a first aid kit as a clear warning to stay out of his way. Later, when Integra Hellsing storms the Major's zeppelin, he allows her to pass and even points her in the right direction, earning a sarcastic compliment on his politeness. These actions, combined with details revealed at his death, lead many to believe that he does not truly share Millennium's ideology. Instead, his motivation appears to be a deep-seated desire for a glorious death in battle against a worthy opponent, which he ultimately finds. It is implied that the only person he truly despises is Alucard, for reasons never explicitly stated.

The Captain plays the crucial role of the Major's protector and Millennium's ultimate enforcer. In the modern day, he is tasked with retrieving an elderly Walter C. Dornez, bringing him back to Millennium to be transformed into a loyal, youthful vampire soldier. He later leaps from a zeppelin to confront Alucard and Anderson in the streets of London. His most significant engagement is his final battle against Seras Victoria, the police girl turned vampire, who storms the flagship with Integra. During this fight, he gradually unleashes his true power, transforming first into a monstrous wolf and then a bipedal werewolf. This duel serves as his role in the story's climax, pitting Millennium's ultimate monster against the new power of the Hellsing Organization. His death is a pivotal moment that allows Seras to prove her strength and continue her mission.

The Captain's key relationship is, of course, with the Major, whom he protects with absolute loyalty, though the nature of their bond remains ambiguous. He has a long-standing rivalry with Walter, having fought him both as a boy and as an old man, and is one of the few beings capable of easily catching Walter's monofilament wires. His brief but impactful interaction with Seras Victoria defines his end, as he knowingly provides her with the means to kill him. Over the course of the story, the Captain does not undergo a traditional character arc. Instead, his development is one of revelation; his silent, impenetrable exterior is slowly peeled back to reveal a lonely, war-driven creature seeking an end to his long existence. His death, where he laughs and smiles from genuine happiness, is the ultimate expression of his character, marking the fulfillment of his only true wish.

In terms of abilities, the Captain is one of the most powerful beings in the Hellsing universe, with powers that rival even Alucard. As a natural werewolf, he possesses immense superhuman strength, capable of kicking a missile casing or Seras Victoria through a wall with ease and bending steel bars. His speed and reflexes are extraordinary, allowing him to intercept Walter's nearly invisible wires and react to attacks from multiple opponents simultaneously. His body is unnaturally durable; his flesh can withstand the pressure of Walter's wires, which can easily slice through steel, without being cut. He also possesses a powerful regenerative healing factor, able to instantly regrow a mutilated hand. A unique and formidable ability is his power to transform his body into an intangible, mist-like form. In this state, he is immune to all physical attacks, though he cannot attack himself and must become solid to strike. He also appears to have control over a wolf-like form and can shift between human, werewolf, and great wolf states at will. In his human form, he wields a pair of custom, long-barreled Mauser C96 pistols with supernatural accuracy. His one known weakness is silver. A silver tooth, taken from a concentration camp victim, is the weapon used to finally kill him when thrust into his heart, as the wound would not regenerate.
