Description
Luke Valentine is an artificial vampire and a member of the Millennium organization, serving with the SS rank of Oberscharführer. He is the elder brother of Jan Valentine, and the two are often referred to as the Valentine brothers. Luke is characterized by a calm, composed, and sophisticated demeanor, which stands in sharp contrast to his younger brother’s vulgar and excitable nature. He presents himself as a well-dressed, soft-spoken individual, but beneath this polished exterior lies a ruthless and highly capable combatant.
His background prior to becoming a vampire is not explored in detail, but it is known that he operates as a Millennium agent and takes great pride in his abilities. Luke’s primary motivation is to test his own strength against the most formidable opponent he can find: Alucard, the vampire servant of the Hellsing Organization. He views himself as more than just a disposable tool and seeks to prove that he is a worthy adversary, not simply a cog in Millennium’s war machine.
Luke plays a key role in the story as one of the first major antagonists faced by Alucard in Hellsing Ultimate. He leads a platoon of ghouls in a preemptive strike on the Hellsing mansion during a meeting of the Knights of the Round Table. His assigned mission is to kill Alucard. He confronts the vampire in his basement lair, initially relying on his extraordinary speed and a pair of modified M1 Garand rifles to gain the upper hand. However, when Alucard activates the Cromwell Invocation, unleashing a fraction of his true power in the form of the Black Hound of Baskerville, Luke is overwhelmed by fear and attempts to flee. Alucard shoots off both of his legs with the Jackal, and the Black Hound devours him.
Luke later reappears during the final battle in London. After Alucard releases his full power and uses the Black Hound against the altered Walter C. Dornez, Walter destroys the hound, which releases Luke’s essence. Walter captures Luke and uses him as a weapon against Alucard. In the end, Alucard frees Luke and uses him as a decoy to foil Walter’s attack, leading to Luke’s final destruction.
In terms of relationships, Luke’s bond with his brother Jan is one of contrast but also cooperation; they work together as a team, with Luke providing the strategic mind while Jan creates chaos. His relationship with Alucard is central to his character arc: he initially views Alucard as the ultimate challenge, but his arrogance crumbles in the face of Alucard’s true power, revealing his underlying cowardice. His relationship with the Major and other Millennium members is that of a subordinate, though he harbors a desire to be seen as more than a mere asset.
Luke’s notable abilities are typical of vampires in the Hellsing universe, including superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes, enhanced senses, regeneration from non-fatal wounds, and immunity to small-arms fire. He also possesses the ability to create ghouls by biting humans who are not virgins. Unlike true vampires, he does not display high-level shapeshifting or magical abilities; instead, he relies on his physical prowess and his skill with firearms and knives. His most distinctive trait is his phenomenal speed, which allows him to dodge bullets and move faster than most opponents can track. Despite these powers, he lacks the deeper, more esoteric capabilities of a natural vampire like Alucard, and his reliance on speed and firearms ultimately proves insufficient against a truly ancient and powerful foe.
