Description
Pip Bernadotte is a French mercenary captain and the leader of the Wild Geese, a private military company hired by the Hellsing Organization. He comes from a family of mercenaries that spans eight generations, and he embodies that lineage as a professional soldier of fortune who operates on the principle that loyalty is owed to whoever pays for his services. The Wild Geese are brought in by the Hellsing butler Walter after the Valentine Brothers' raid destroys most of the organization's regular combat forces, making Pip and his crew the new frontline soldiers in Hellsing's fight against supernatural threats.

In appearance, Pip is a tall, wiry man with messy blond hair, an eyepatch over his left eye, and a military-style uniform topped with a beret. He is almost never seen without a cigarette, and his relaxed posture and sly grin give him a roguish, devil-may-care look. On the surface, he comes across as shallow, crude, greedy, and perpetually flirtatious, with a fondness for smoking, drinking, and making suggestive remarks. Beneath that rough exterior, however, he is an honorable and dependable man capable of genuine bravery and selfless compassion. He is a charismatic leader who shares a close bond with his crew and treats his men like family, and they follow him with deep loyalty. He also carries a strong sense of personal honor, notably refusing to abandon a woman to fight alone.

Pip's motivations are rooted in professionalism and camaraderie. As a mercenary, he works for payment, but his conduct shows that he is driven by more than money: he takes responsibility for his squad, adapts quickly to the reality of fighting vampires and other undead, and proves himself a pragmatic strategist who can hold his own against enemies far beyond ordinary human threats. Initially skeptical of the Hellsing Organization and doubtful that vampires exist, he changes his mind after Seras Victoria physically overpowers him with a single hand. Over time, his respect for Integra Hellsing, Alucard, and the organization's mission grows, and he becomes a reliable and integral part of the team rather than a mere hired outsider.

His most significant relationship is with Seras Victoria. After overcoming his initial fear of her because she is a vampire, Pip develops a romantic interest in her and begins a pattern of playful teasing and flirtation that gradually deepens into sincere admiration and love. Seras is initially put off by his outward behavior, but their bond strengthens as they fight side by side. This relationship defines his character development, transforming him from a casual, self-interested mercenary into a devoted and self-sacrificing soldier. During a battle against Millennium forces led by Zorin Blitz, the situation turns desperate: Seras is blinded and loses an arm, and Pip, already severely wounded, throws himself in harm's way to save her and is impaled and killed. In his final moments, he urges her to drink his blood, and she honors that wish, making him her familiar. In this form, he continues to exist as the conscious familiar bound to Seras, and his sacrifice empowers her abilities and leaves a lasting mark on her character.

As a fighter, Pip is a highly skilled marksman and an experienced combatant well versed in tactics. His training allows him to face the undead with surprising effectiveness for a normal human, and his quick reflexes, resilience, and ability to adapt to supernatural combat situations make him a valuable asset to the Hellsing forces. Though he has no supernatural powers of his own during his life, his competence, courage, and willingness to sacrifice everything for those he cares about define his abilities both as a soldier and as a person.
