Yuri Lowenthal
Description
Yuri Lowenthal is an American voice actor, producer, and screenwriter widely recognized for his extensive contributions to English-language dubs of anime, as well as his work in animation and video games. Born on March 5, 1971, in Alliance, Ohio, and raised in Tennessee and Northern Virginia, his path to voice acting was shaped by a deep interest in East Asian culture. He majored in East Asian studies at The College of William & Mary, spending his third year studying in Osaka, Japan. After graduating in 1993, he participated in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET), working as a Coordinator of International Relations in Shiga Prefecture for two years.
Upon returning to the United States, Lowenthal pursued acting in New York City for six years, performing in theatre and independent films, before relocating to Los Angeles. To supplement his on-camera work, he and his wife, fellow voice actor Tara Platt, took a voice-over class. Their instructor, Rick Zieff, was directing the English dub for the anime SD Gundam Force and provided Lowenthal with his first role in the industry, voicing the character Bakunetsumaru. This opportunity launched a prolific career in anime dubbing.
Lowenthal has since become a prominent and familiar voice in English-language anime. He is perhaps best known for his long-running role as Sasuke Uchiha in the global phenomenon Naruto and its sequel, Naruto: Shippuden. Another iconic role is that of Suzaku Kururugi in the critically acclaimed series Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, a character he has reprised in subsequent films like Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection. His lead roles also include Simon in Gurren Lagann, Jinnosuke (Kuma) in Afro Samurai and its sequel Afro Samurai: Resurrection, and Barnaby Brooks Jr. in Tiger & Bunny, including its 2022 sequel, Tiger & Bunny 2.
His anime filmography includes a wide array of other significant characters. He voices Shinra Kishitani in the Durarara!! series, including its sequels. He has taken on roles in features such as Meis in the two Promare short films, Luca in Dragon Quest: Your Story, and the titular character's alter-ego, Damian Wayne/Robin, in the animated film Batman Ninja. Earlier in his career, he voiced lead roles like Haru Glory in Rave Master, which aired on Cartoon Network, and Son Goku in Saiyuki Reload. He has also appeared in dubs for Bleach (as Keigo Asano), Hellsing Ultimate (as Pip Bernadotte), and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (as Riddhe Marcenas).
Beyond acting, Lowenthal co-founded the production company Monkey Kingdom Productions with his wife, Tara Platt. He is also the co-author, with Platt, of the book Voice-Over Voice Actor: What It's Like Behind the Mic, a guide for aspiring voice actors. His work has garnered widespread recognition, establishing him as a leading figure in the voice acting community. While he is highly acclaimed for his anime roles, his voice is also widely known to video game audiences for his performances as the Prince in the Prince of Persia series, Yosuke Hanamura in Persona 4, and as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the acclaimed Marvel's Spider-Man video games.
