Description
Kinji Hakari is a third-year student at Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, also known as Tokyo Jujutsu High. However, he is not an active student at the start of the Culling Game arc. Due to a history of conflict with the conservative leadership of the jujutsu world, Hakari was suspended from the school for nearly a year. This suspension stemmed from an incident during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, where he was dispatched to Kyoto but ended up violently clashing with and severely beating members of the conservative faction. Consequently, he did not participate in the Kyoto Sister School Goodwill Event.
Hakari possesses a rugged and intimidating appearance, often appearing with an older face and unshaven stubble. His personality is characterized by a rebellious spirit and a refusal to adhere to the strict rules and traditions of jujutsu society. He is a compulsive gambler at heart, living his life by a philosophy of pure passion and the thrill of high stakes. Following his suspension, he withdrew from mainstream jujutsu activities to run an underground gambling arena known as the Gachinko Fight Club, located in an abandoned parking garage in Tochigi Prefecture. In this illegal venue, non-sorcerers place bets as jujutsu sorcerers and curse users engage in brutal hand-to-hand combat, with Hakari serving as the organizer and bookmaker to support himself. Despite his rough and rebellious demeanor, he holds respect for specific authority figures like Satoru Gojo and Masamichi Yaga, referring to them as people he is indebted to. He was deeply shaken upon learning of Gojo’s sealing and Yaga’s execution.
Hakari’s primary motivation for eventually rejoining the main conflict is tied to his personal code and his interest in individuals who demonstrate genuine passion and resolve. He is recruited by Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro, who seek his immense power to help them in the Culling Game. After encountering Yuji and witnessing his determination, Hakari agrees to lend his strength. His role in the story is that of a powerful and somewhat unpredictable ally. His strength is highly regarded by his peers; Satoru Gojo has stated that Hakari has the potential to become a sorcerer on par with him, while Yuta Okkotsu has mentioned that when Hakari is in good form, he might even be stronger than himself. In the Culling Game, he takes on some of the most dangerous opponents, including Kashimo Hajime, demonstrating the demeanor of a reliable senior.
In terms of key relationships, Hakari is closely connected to his fellow suspended third-year student, Kirara Hoshi. They work together running the underground fight club, and Kirara is often seen guarding the entrance and assisting him. Their bond is strong, and Kirara plays a key role in Hakari’s interactions with the main cast. He also forms a significant connection with Panda, as the two know each other from Jujutsu High, and Hakari ultimately saves Panda’s life during a critical battle in the Culling Game.
Hakari’s most notable ability is his unique and complex cursed technique, which is fundamentally a materialization of a gambling system modeled after pachinko, specifically a machine themed around a fictional romance manga called "Private Pure Love Train." His power comes with a built-in Domain Expansion called Idle Death Gamble. When Hakari activates this domain, it recreates the presentation and mechanics of a pachinko machine. The opponent is forcibly taught the rules, and the battle becomes a high-stakes gamble. The goal is to hit a "jackpot" by lining up matching symbols. While the probability of a jackpot is statistically low, Hakari possesses extraordinary luck, often forcing a win within a certain number of draws.
The true terror of his ability is revealed when he hits the jackpot. Upon doing so, a special sequence triggers for approximately four minutes and eleven seconds, which is the length of the theme song. During this period, Hakari gains effectively unlimited cursed energy. This infinite surplus of energy causes his body to reflexively perform reverse cursed technique to avoid taking damage, resulting in automatic and continuous healing of any injury. This makes him nearly impossible to kill for the duration of the jackpot. Furthermore, because the unlimited cursed energy replenishes his reserves, he is able to immediately activate his Domain Expansion again after the invincibility period ends. This creates a potentially endless loop of gambling, where as long as his luck continues, he can chain together jackpots and remain in a state of near-total invincibility, turning battles into one-sided endurance matches. His regeneration speed from this ability has even been evaluated as surpassing that of Satoru Gojo and Sukuna.
