Description
Daedalus Yumeno is the chief physician of the Division of Health and Welfare in the domed city of Romdeau, as well as the head of the secretive Proxy Research Team. He serves as the personal physician to Re-L Mayer, the granddaughter of the city’s regent. Physically, Daedalus appears as a youthful and somewhat androgynous figure, resembling a boy no older than thirteen or fourteen, though a conversation with Raul Creed suggests he may be considerably older than his appearance indicates. He has dark hair and a composed, professional demeanor, often seen in a lab coat befitting his scientific status. He is accompanied by two modified AutoReivs named Deleuze and Guatarri, who act as his entourage.

In his role as chief physician, Daedalus is intelligent, methodical, and highly skilled, overseeing the health of Romdeau’s citizens and controlling the Womb Room, the city’s population manufacturing station. He is also one of the lead researchers on the Proxy Project, tasked with containing and studying Monad Proxy. While he is deeply knowledgeable about the Proxies and the true nature of Romdeau, he remains secretive, revealing only what serves his purposes. Beneath his calm and professional surface lies a darker, obsessive personality, particularly concerning his feelings for Re-L.

Daedalus’s primary motivation is his obsessive love for Re-L Mayer, which is the driving force behind many of his actions. His dedication to her blurs the line between professional duty and personal desire, leading him to extreme measures. He is also driven by an intellectual curiosity about the Proxies, believing that unlocking their mysteries could grant humanity great power. This ambition, combined with his emotional fixation on Re-L, steadily leads him down a path toward moral compromise and a loss of sanity.

Daedalus plays a crucial supporting role in the story. Initially a trusted authority figure within Romdeau, he later aids Re-L by faking her death to help her escape the city when it is attacked by infected AutoReivs. After Re-L departs with Vincent Law, Daedalus becomes consumed by his obsession, continuing Proxy research under Raul Creed. Ultimately, he creates a clone of Re-L, whom he names Real, as a replacement for the original. This act signifies his complete unraveling and his desire to possess the object of his affection.

Daedalus’s key relationships are central to his character arc. His connection to Re-L Mayer is the most significant, transforming from professional care to an unhealthy, possessive devotion that defines his actions in the latter half of the series. He also works alongside Raul Creed, head of the Citizen Intelligence Bureau, in research efforts, though their relationship is one of professional alliance rather than personal friendship. His creation, the clone Real, ultimately embodies his obsession and his failure, as she is revealed to be linked to Monad Proxy and chooses to leave him behind.

Throughout the series, Daedalus undergoes a clear development from a brilliant but reserved scientist to a desperate and mentally unstable individual. His sanity deteriorates as he clings to the hope of recovering Re-L, culminating in the creation of her clone. His final moments come when he is crushed by falling rubble as the dome of Romdeau collapses. He survives long enough to see his creation, Real, fly away into the sunlight, and his last words to the original Re-L are to run and leave him behind.

As an accomplished physician and researcher, Daedalus is highly capable in medical science and genetic engineering. He is instrumental in developing technology such as the FP rays that can destroy the Amrita cells of a Proxy. While his abilities are rooted in advanced science rather than superpowers, his expertise allows him to perform feats that seem extraordinary, such as attempting to regenerate Monad Proxy and creating a perfect human clone.
