Movie
Description
Luka Redgrave, a journalist haunted by his father Antonio’s death, witnessed invisible forces tear Antonio apart when a coffin released Bayonetta from her 500-year slumber. This childhood trauma cemented his belief that Bayonetta murdered Antonio, fueling a lifelong vendetta. As an adult, Luka relentlessly pursues her using Antonio’s investigative notes, planting surveillance devices and tailing her to Vigrid. He repeatedly attempts to photograph or confront Bayonetta but is consistently outmaneuvered. During these clashes, she dubs him "Cheshire," and he employs a grappling hook for evasion and traversal.

His obsession entangles him with Bayonetta’s quest when he encounters Cereza, a young girl under her protection. Initially suspecting Bayonetta of manipulating Cereza, Luka shifts to helping safeguard the child during angelic assaults. Cereza lends him her glasses, allowing him to see into Purgatorio and witness the angels Bayonetta battles, challenging his convictions about her role in Antonio’s demise.

Luka aids Bayonetta and Cereza en route to Isla del Sol, hijacking military vehicles and a helicopter. When Jeanne destroys their helicopter, he distracts her to help Cereza escape, surviving a jeep explosion using his grappling hook. At the Ithavoll Building, Balder reveals angels under his command—not Bayonetta—killed Antonio, reshaping Luka’s perspective. Thrown from a window and presumed dead, Luka survives, later attending Bayonetta’s staged funeral and leaving rosemary on her tomb—a demon-repelling herb symbolizing remembrance.

In the non-canon *Bloody Fate* adaptation, Luka retains his core vendetta but emphasizes comedic and passive traits. His investigations lead him to a mass suicide at Bayonetta’s church. A notable deviation occurs when he attempts to bug her residence during her bath; confronted naked, he stumbles out a window in embarrassment. His competence diminishes, reducing him to a tag-along during action sequences, like driving Cereza while Bayonetta fights angels. The film omits his helicopter rescue and minimizes his climax role.

Luka’s design evolves: initially wearing a gray sleeveless jacket, blue scarf, and fingerless gloves; later adopting a cowboy-inspired outfit with a patterned hat, leather jacket, and fringed pants. Rodin upgrades his glasses to permanently reveal Purgatorio. Personality-wise, he shifts from obsessive hatred to reluctant allyship after Balder’s revelation, displaying resourcefulness and sporadic bravery. *Bloody Fate* amplifies his clumsiness, relegating him to comic relief.
