Description
Alviss is a sixteen-year-old former member of the Cross Guard who becomes a key figure in Team MÄR. He is a young man with black hair that has a bluish tint, blue eyes, and pale skin. His most distinctive facial feature is the pair of inverted peach-colored triangles located beneath his left eye. He typically wears a white shirt with blue stripes running from the shoulders down the arms, with zippers allowing the sleeves to be detached, and black pants adorned with a totem-like chain on the left side. A muscular build gives him a surprisingly athletic physique for his age. Across his chest and spreading along his body is the Zombie Tattoo, a curse placed upon him that will eventually turn him into an immortal undead being should it ever cover his entire form.

The Zombie Tattoo is the defining burden of Alviss's life. He was only ten years old when he joined the Cross Guard during the first great war, fighting alongside its leader, Danna, to protect MÄR-Heaven from the Chess Pieces. His courage in that conflict drew the attention of the fearsome Phantom, who marked the young boy with the tattoo as a cursed gift, condemning him to a future as an immortal zombie. Alviss rejects this fate entirely and makes it his life's singular goal to defeat Phantom and rid himself of the curse. A superior in the Cross Guard named Gaira recognized this burning determination and took Alviss on as a student, training him rigorously until Alviss was finally able to defeat his master in a wooden sword fight, a victory that earned him the powerful ÄRMs Gatekeeper Clown and the 13 Totem Pole. During this period of training, he also befriended a small fairy named Belle, who becomes his constant and devoted companion.

In terms of personality, Alviss initially presents as a cold and distant figure. He is a young man of few words, speaking only when necessary and often coming across as harsh and distrustful. This is most evident in his early interactions with Ginta, the boy he summons to MÄR-Heaven using his broken Dimension ÄRM, Gatekeeper Clown. Alviss is immediately disappointed that the one who arrived is a child with no magical power and treats him with open suspicion, even threatening to destroy his talking ÄRM partner, Babbo. However, this icy exterior masks a deep-seated desire for companionship and a profound respect for strength and courage. As Ginta proves himself through battle and by displaying an unwavering spirit, Alviss slowly begins to trust him, eventually holding the young hero in high regard and acknowledging the similarities between Ginta and Danna, Ginta's father and Alviss's own mentor. Alviss holds several individuals in the highest esteem, including Alan, Gaira, and Danna, idolizing them as mentors and working subconsciously to become as strong and reliable as they are. He rarely shows emotion, but he does so when facing his rival Rolan, when confronting Phantom, and when he is in the presence of Belle.

Alviss plays a pivotal role in the story as the catalyst who brings the protagonist into the world. After summoning Ginta, he follows the group, observing and eventually joining the War Games as the sole representative of the Cross Guard to survive the preliminaries. During the tournament, he forms a significant rivalry with Rolan, a Knight of the Chess Pieces who also bears a Zombie Tattoo. Unlike Alviss, Rolan wears his curse with twisted pride, making their battles a clash of ideologies as much as a test of power. They fight twice during the War Games; Alviss loses their first encounter in the third round but ultimately emerges victorious in their final match. His key relationships within the team evolve from distrust to mutual respect. He initially dismisses Jack as a fool, turning him into a bird with his Darkness ÄRM, Caged Bird, but eventually acknowledges his worth. He comes to respect Nanashi's power and Snow's bravery, and he shares a deep, if often unspoken, understanding with the powerful witch Dorothy.

Alviss undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. He begins as a solitary figure, closed off and burdened by his curse. Through his interactions with Ginta and the rest of Team MÄR, he slowly opens up and learns to trust others, standing fully to face his destiny instead of merely enduring it. In the anime, his struggle with the Zombie Tattoo reaches a climax when it is artificially accelerated by the Ghost Chess, causing him to fall under Phantom's control. He ultimately manages to resist and break free, confronting Phantom directly. When he finds himself unable to deliver the final blow, Phantom uses Alviss's own weapon to kill himself, finally freeing Alviss from the curse. In the manga, Alviss volunteers to end Phantom's life after his defeat, coldly stating that with all his sins, Phantom is unlikely to join his love, Alma, in heaven. In the final battle against the Chess King, Alviss sacrifices himself to protect his friends and is later brought back to life after the King's defeat. At the end of his journey, he is freed from his curse and finds peace, living together with Belle, the fairy who has been by his side through all his trials.

Alviss is a formidable fighter whose abilities are rooted in his collection of mystical ÄRMs. His primary weapon is the 13 Totem Pole, a chain Guardian ÄRM that has two modes. In Rod Mode, it becomes a powerful staff made of thirteen sections that he uses for close combat, and it can extend its length for greater reach. In Guardian Mode, he can summon a barrage of massive totem poles to erupt from the ground to attack or confine his enemies. He also possesses the immensely powerful Guardian ÄRM, Á Bao A Qu, which summons a colossal, fortress-like creature whose gaze can trap opponents in a glass ball that then detonates from within. For defense, he uses Guardiss, a ring that manifests a large shield with a cross on it. His tactics are supplemented by several Darkness ÄRMs, including Sealing Skull, which paralyzes a target while showing them terrifying visions but causes the user excruciating pain as a price, and Caged Bird, which transforms a target into a bird trapped in a cage. The Purific Ave, a Holy ÄRM given to him by Ginta, is said to be the only ÄRM capable of permanently killing Phantom and destroying the Zombie Tattoo curse.
