TV-Series
Description
Daedalus Yumeno is the chief physician leading the Proxy Research Team and serves as the Director of the Division of Health and Welfare in the domed city of Romdeau. He also acts as the personal physician to Re-l Mayer, the granddaughter of Romdeau’s regent. His position grants him immense authority over the city’s medical and scientific apparatus, including control of the Womb Room, the facility responsible for managing the city's population through artificial means. He is also one of the lead researchers on the Proxy Project, giving him access to deep secrets regarding the true nature of the Proxies and the foundation of Romdeau itself.
Daedalus possesses the physical appearance of a young boy, no older than thirteen or fourteen years old, with delicate, almost androgynous features. However, his actual age is ambiguous, and conversations with other characters, such as Raul Creed, imply that he may be significantly older than he looks. He is often accompanied by a pair of modified AutoReivs named Deleuze and Guatarri, who serve as his entourage and assist him in his duties.
In terms of personality, Daedalus is sharp-witted, methodical, and exceedingly intelligent, embodying the ideal of a brilliant scientist. His calm and professional demeanor often masks a deeply obsessive nature, specifically regarding Re-l Mayer. This fixation blurs the lines between his personal feelings and his professional responsibilities, leading him to act on his desires rather than logic. He is secretive and knows far more about the truth of Romdeau and the Proxies than he ever reveals to the public or even to his colleagues, and he seems to operate largely free from the strict regulations that bind other citizens.
Daedalus’s primary motivation is his obsessive love for Re-l Mayer. This compulsion drives him to extreme measures, particularly after she leaves Romdeau to search for Vincent Law. Unable to accept her absence, he creates a clone of Re-l as a replacement. As the clone, whom he names Real, begins to develop its own will and is ultimately possessed by the memories of the Monad Proxy, Daedalus’s mental state deteriorates rapidly. His actions shift from those of a loyal servant of Romdeau to a figure consumed by ambition and a desperate need to possess what he cannot have, ultimately losing his sanity in the process.
His key relationships are primarily defined by his connection to Re-l Mayer. Having grown up with her or at least known her for a long time, he serves as her trusted doctor, but this relationship is undercut by his possessive tendencies. He also works in the same bureaucratic and authoritarian system as Raul Creed, though his actions are often in opposition to Raul’s goals. His research brings him into contact with the Monad Proxy, whose remains and data he utilizes in his failed experiments to create a perfect being for himself.
Over the course of the story, Daedalus undergoes a clear development from a genius intellectual in a position of power to a tragic, broken individual. Initially appearing as a calm and collected authority figure, he steadily unravels as his personal obsessions clash with reality. His most significant action is the creation of the Re-l clone, an act that Raul Creed describes as him having "lost it." His downfall concludes when his creation, Real, flies away to seek out Ergo Proxy (Vincent Law). Left behind in the collapsing dome of Romdeau, Daedalus is fatally crushed by falling rubble. He survives long enough to witness Real being incinerated by sunlight, finally accepting that Re-l has always left him behind before he dies.
As a scientist, Daedalus possesses notable abilities in genetic engineering, medicine, and proxy research. He is responsible for creating a clone of Re-l and is capable of manipulating Amrita cells, the biological source of a Proxy's power and immortality. He can create specialized weapons designed to kill Proxies, which are implied to mimic the effects of ultraviolet rays from sunlight, the primary vulnerability of these creatures. His research and creations are central to the plot, as they directly lead to the emergence of the "Real" character and the subsequent events in the series' climax.
