TV-Series
Description
Monad, also designated Proxy Thirteen, is the Proxy responsible for the creation and supervision of the Mosk dome. Her background is closely tied to Ergo Proxy, whom she is said to have loved. She was originally a Proxy with a nightmarish appearance, the result of surgical tampering by the scientists of Romdeau. Her most significant act prior to the main events of the story was entering into an agreement with Proxy One to remove Ergo Proxy's memories. This was done so that Ergo Proxy could abandon his designated duty of administering death and instead live as a human. Monad was entrusted with safeguarding those removed memories. Early in the series, she is killed by Ergo Proxy, a confrontation that sets much of the narrative in motion. Her corpse, bearing the mark of Proxy Thirteen, is later recovered and becomes a subject of study. Later in the story, Monad is recreated in the physical image of Re-l Mayer, though distinguished by her snowy white hair. In this new form, she possesses the ability to sprout wings from her back, reminiscent of an angelic figure. Her motivations are largely defined by her love for Ergo Proxy and her desire to see him freed from his role as an instrument of death. After bidding farewell to Vincent Law, who carries Ergo Proxy's identity, she chooses to fly high into the heavens and ultimately perishes upon being exposed to sunlight in the final episode. Her role in the story is that of a catalyst, whose initial death and later reappearance drive the central themes of memory, identity, and purpose that define the narrative. Her key relationships include her love for Ergo Proxy, her pact with Proxy One, and her eventual symbolic connection to Re-l Mayer through the form she takes at the end. Her development sees her transition from a Proxy bound by duty and sacrifice to a being who seeks a final, transcendent release. Her most notable ability is her power to manifest wings and take flight, an act she uses to ascend and end her existence.
