Description
Brother 2, also known as Ninoji, is a member of the Empty Seven, a clan of assassin monks who serve as antagonists in the story of Afro Samurai. His name reflects his numerical position within the group, which is led by Brother 1. Brother 2 is characterized by his loyalty to the Empty Seven and his willingness to carry out its brutal objectives without hesitation.
In terms of appearance, Brother 2 is depicted as an older male with white hair and black eyes. His primary role within the Empty Seven is that of the clan's observer and tracker. He is frequently seen using a high-tech pair of binoculars to monitor the progress of the protagonist, Afro, from a distance. This duty establishes him as the eyes of the clan on the battlefield, tasked with reporting Afro's movements and activities back to Brother 1 via cell phone. He is often accompanied in this task by another member of the group, Brother 6.
Brother 2's personality is marked by a cold and ruthless dedication to his mission. He demonstrates a fierce and aggressive temperament, particularly when he perceives a threat to the clan's goals. When his comrade, Brother 6, engages Afro directly during a battle with the warrior Soshun, Brother 2 reacts with anger, worried that the fight could lead to the destruction of the Sacred Number 2 Headband, the very object the Empty Seven seeks to obtain. His cruelty is most clearly displayed in his treatment of the character Okiku, also known as Otsuru. After she betrays the Empty Seven by revealing their plans to Afro and failing to kill him, Brother 2 impales her with an extending Buddhist staff or kunai, killing her for her betrayal. This act of violence serves as a pivotal moment, cementing his role as a villain and creating a direct reason for Afro to seek vengeance against him.
Beyond his observational duties, Brother 2 is also a combatant. In battle, he wields an extending staff, which he uses as a piercing weapon. His skills, however, are not enough to protect him from Afro's wrath. Later in the story, while Brother 2 is spying on Afro from a mountain and planning an ambush, Afro turns the tables on him. Afro ambushes Brother 2 from behind and enacts a brutal vengeance for the murder of Okiku by gouging out his eyes and forcing his own binoculars into the empty sockets, an act that likely results in his death.
The character's development and fate differ between the anime and manga adaptations. In the manga, Brother 2 exhibits a notable moment of doubt and a desire for self-preservation that is absent in the anime. After Afro slaughters many of their assassins and several of his brothers, Brother 2 argues with Brother 1, expressing a wish to leave Afro alone and live in peace. He openly questions the fanaticism of Brother 1, who desires the immortality supposedly granted by the headbands. For this perceived betrayal of the clan's sacred mission, Brother 1 kills Brother 2 himself. This version of events provides a deeper look into a potential conflict within the Empty Seven, suggesting that not all members were blindly devoted to their path.
