Description
Nerine is a main character in the Shuffle series and the only daughter of Forbesii, the King of the Devils, and his wife Sage. She is also the cousin of Lisianthus, often called Sia. Nerine comes to the Human World after her childhood memories of Rin Tsuchimi draw her back to him, and she enrolls at Verbena Academy, where she is placed in the same homeroom as Rin. She becomes one of the marriage candidates for Rin, a situation arranged by the rulers of the divine and demon worlds. Nerine is generally reserved and speaks with a gentle, polite demeanor, but she can become fiercely intense when provoked, especially if someone insults or threatens Rin. In such moments, she unleashes powerful offensive magic without hesitation, once causing the school gymnasium to disappear. She is academically excellent and possesses extraordinary magical ability, among the strongest in the series, with spells capable of leveling entire city blocks. However, she is poor at sports and has limited domestic skills, able to cook only omelets well, though she works to improve. Her appearance is characterized by long blue hair, red eyes with a petite frame, and she is noted as having a voluptuous figure attributed to her demon lineage. Nerine’s past is deeply tied to Lycoris, a clone created in the Demon World who was nearly identical to her except for purple eyes. As a child, Nerine suffered from an incurable illness, and Lycoris sacrificed her own life to save her. Because of this, Nerine absorbed Lycoris’s spirit, emotions, and singing voice, known as the Angel’s Bell. This inheritance leaves Nerine struggling with guilt, feeling she has stolen everything from Lycoris, and leads her to hate singing despite possessing Lycoris’s beautiful voice. Her motivations center on overcoming this guilt and finding her own identity, as well as deepening her bond with Rin. In the story, Nerine’s role is one of Rin’s primary love interests and a key figure among the demon royalty and her presence drives much of the romantic and emotional conflict alongside Sia, Primula, Kaede, and Asa in her key relationships, Nerine’s bond with Rin is central her affection for him began after Lycoris spoke fondly of him, and she develops her own feelings as she experiences his kindness. Her relationship with Sia is one of mutual respect and genuine friendship despite their romantic rivalry, and the two often spend time together. With her father Forbesii, she is respectful but does not hesitate to reprimand him for foolish behavior, sometimes calling him Devil King instead of Father as mild protest. Her mother Sage is a close confidant who supports her emotionally. The memory of Lycoris remains a defining influence throughout her arc. Nerine’s character development involves moving from a state of guilt and despair to acceptance and self-worth. After confessing both her love for Rin and the truth about Lycoris, she falls into despair and considers ending her life. Rin intervenes by challenging her to reach him by a deadline, and when he succeeds, he reassures her that Lycoris’s wish was for Nerine to live, sing, and smile as herself, not as a vessel for Lycoris’s memory. This pivotal moment allows her to begin healing and embrace her own identity. Her notable abilities include her powerful destructive magic, her inherited singing voice known as the Angel’s Bell, and her strong academic performance. She is also skilled at sewing, which contrasts with her lack of cooking ability.
