Description
The character known as Nyu and Lucy, whose birth name is Kaede, is the central figure of the anime Elfen Lied. She is a Diclonius, a mutant offshoot of humanity distinguished by two horn-like protrusions on her head and by powerful telekinetic abilities. In the anime she appears to be around eighteen years old. She is described as the original Diclonius and the only one of her kind capable of reproducing naturally, which makes her uniquely important to the research facility that studies her.
Her background explains her dual nature. As a young girl, Kaede was abandoned and placed in an orphanage, where she was ostracized and tormented by other children because of her horns. Her first acts of lethal violence came after a boy killed a puppy she had been caring for in front of her, and she murdered the children responsible out of revenge. Around the same time, she formed a bond with a boy named Kouta, who treated her with kindness and became the one person she trusted. When she saw Kouta with his cousin Yuka and believed she had been forgotten in favor of them, jealousy drove her to kill Kouta's father and younger sister. She was later captured and held in a research facility for years, where she was treated as a subject of experimentation and from which she eventually escaped.
The two names attached to her reflect two distinct personalities. Lucy is the aggressive, calculating, and vengeful side of the character. She regards ordinary humans as less than people, shows little empathy toward them, and kills quickly, often sadistically, using her invisible vectors to tear apart or severely maim her opponents rather than grant them quick deaths. She is, however, capable of affection and loyalty toward other Diclonii and toward animals, and she refuses to harm Kouta, carrying deep guilt over the deaths of his family. Nyu is the childlike personality that emerged after Lucy was shot in the head during her escape from the facility. Nyu has an infantile understanding of the world, an innocent and gentle manner, and almost no language, initially able only to say the sound nyu, from which her name comes. She is the opposite of Lucy in temperament and is incapable of violent acts.
The two personalities trade control depending on circumstances. A blow to the head, a direct threat, or an experience of rage causes Nyu to regress into Lucy, while kindness and warmth, or Lucy's own wish to hide from Kouta, bring Nyu back. Over time the boundary between them softens. Nyu gradually learns to speak normally and becomes more independent, while Lucy develops remorse and a desire to reconcile with Kouta rather than simply seek revenge.
Lucy's central motivation is shaped by her mistreatment at the hands of humans. Her hatred of humanity stems from the abuse she suffered, and her desire for vengeance drives much of her violent behavior. At the same time, she longs to be close to Kouta, and her guilt over killing his family makes her believe he is better off without her. Her willingness to let the Nyu personality take over is partly a way of protecting Kouta from the killer she has become. Her motivations therefore sit between rage and regret, and the story explores whether her violence comes from her nature as a Diclonius or from the cruelty she experienced.
Within the story, the character functions as both protagonist and threat. The series begins with her escape from the research facility and follows the attempts of the Special Assault Team and other Diclonii to recapture or kill her while she lives with Kouta and Yuka under the identity of Nyu. Her presence drives the plot on two levels: as a dangerous fugitive pursued by the military, and as a lost, vulnerable girl being protected by the people who take her in. Her relationship with Kouta is the emotional core of the narrative, since he is the only person from her past who treated her with kindness, the victim of her worst crime, and the one whose acceptance she ultimately seeks. Her relationship with Yuka is marked by jealousy, her relationship with the Diclonius girl Nana by rivalry and reluctant kinship, and her relationship with the facility's director and researchers by ongoing conflict.
Her development over the series carries her from cold vengeance toward remorse. She apologizes to Kouta for killing his family, and at the end of the anime she consciously chooses to confront the people pursuing her alone rather than draw him into further danger. Her character arc remains deliberately ambiguous, because the ending leaves open whether she survives and whether the gentle Nyu personality or the vengeful Lucy personality ultimately defines her.
Her notable abilities come from her Diclonius nature. She possesses six invisible telekinetic arms known as vectors, which extend about two meters from her body and can grasp, strike, and slice through objects and people. Within their range they are swift and lethal, and she can also use them to throw nearby objects as projectiles, lift heavy objects, sense other Diclonii, and stop or deflect gunfire when she concentrates. Her horns are tied to her powers; when they are damaged, her abilities and even her personality are affected, which is what allowed the Nyu personality to take hold. She also carries the vector virus, which can infect human males and cause their future children to be born as Diclonii, making her the potential ancestor of a new species.
