Description
Mesousa is a small, white-furred rabbit-like creature who appears in the anime Pani Poni Dash! as a supporting character. His design parodies the cute mascot archetype common in many anime series, but his actual demeanor is a satirical subversion of that trope. Mesousa suffers from a severe, persistent depression, which is exacerbated by a notable physical limitation: he lacks opposable thumbs. This absence makes even simple everyday tasks nearly impossible for him, which in turn deepens his melancholy. His name is a portmanteau derived from meso meso, a Japanese psychomime for whimpering, and usagi, the Japanese word for rabbit.

Despite his gloomy state, Mesousa is not a pet but rather a companion to the child prodigy teacher Rebecca Miyamoto, often referred to as Becky. He tries to assist her in the classroom, for example by retrieving and holding a footstool so she can reach the blackboard. However, his efforts are usually futile, and he more frequently becomes the target of physical slapstick. He is blown up, has his legs broken, is used as a missile, or receives hot drinks from a cruel cat in a vending machine, all without complaint. His willingness to endure such treatment without protest underscores his role as the series’ primary comedic victim.

Mesousa’s motivations are simple: he attempts to be helpful and fulfill his role as Becky’s companion, but his depression and physical inadequacy constantly undermine him. He also appears to have a mild infatuation with the student Ichijou, though this does not lead to any development. His relationships are defined by his submissive, suffering nature. He is frequently at the mercy of other characters, especially the cat-like deity Nekogami-sama, who torments him. Becky treats him with a degree of indifference, though he is always nearby.

In terms of story role, Mesousa provides a consistent source of deadpan, physical comedy. He never undergoes significant character development; his state remains static across the series. His notable ability is a high tolerance for pain and misfortune, as he routinely survives violence with no visible change in his demeanor. Beyond this, he has no special powers, intelligence, or talents. His depiction is a deliberate parody of useless, cute sidekicks, exaggerated into a figure of pure, uncomplaining misery.
