Description
In the anime Pani Poni Dash!, Kami-sama, also known as Neko-gami-sama or Lord Cat, is a mysterious, cat-like being who claims to be a god. Its true origin and nature are unknown. This character typically appears as an anthropomorphic cat, though its fur and eye color change in every episode it appears. Despite its divine claim, its behavior is quite unusual for a deity. It is most often found residing inside the vending machines of Momotsuki Gakuen, where it claims to be warming the beverages to body temperature by tucking them under its arm.
Personality-wise, Kami-sama is generally portrayed as a polite and friendly figure, lacking true malicious intent. This is reflected in its distinct verbal tic, as it always ends its sentences with the polite desu combined with a cat-like nya. However, its actions frequently cause distress for others, making it an unwitting agent of chaos.
Kami-samas primary role in the story is as an agent of everyday misfortune, particularly for the character Mesousa. Its interactions with this anxious rabbit character serve as a major driving force for exploring Mesousas perpetually depressed personality. The god seems to take no special notice of others, but for Mesousa, encountering Kami-sama is a source of genuine dread and fear, as the cats peculiar actions consistently bring about despair. Despite this effect, Kami-sama bears no particular ill will and is just as likely to act on a whim.
Possessing magical abilities, Kami-sama demonstrates powers that reinforce its status as a strange, supernatural being. Its most consistent ability is warming cold drinks, though its power is also implied by its other recurring trait: the complete and unexplained change of its fur and eye color in each scene or episode. The character does not undergo any significant development, remaining a persistent, static element of the school's surreal environment. The god simply exists as an eccentric force of nature, a walking personification of weird luck who speaks politely as it stirs up trouble for the most vulnerable souls it encounters.
