Azami is a student at the ninja academy in the Village of Mist, appearing as a classmate to the main character, Himawari. Despite presenting as a girl, Azami is actually a boy who has infiltrated the girls' class as a spy. His true mission is to gather information on behalf of a nearby boys' ninja school. This secret is an open one, as the other female students in the class are fully aware of his real gender and his role as a spy, though they largely ignore the fact and accept him as a peer. Only the new teacher, Hayato Marikoji, and the protagonist Himawari are initially unaware of the ruse, and the other students find their cluelessness amusing.
