Description
Chitose Karasuma is a character whose portrayal differs significantly across the various installments of the Galaxy Angel franchise, particularly between the anime series Galaxy Angel X and the original video games. In the context of Galaxy Angel X, which is the fourth anime season, Chitose is introduced as a new addition to the cast with a distinct and often contradictory personality.

Physically, Chitose is a young girl of seventeen years with long, navy blue or purple-blue hair. Her background is defined by a long-term, incurable illness that has kept her hospitalized for most of her life. Having spent years isolated in her room with no friends, she would watch other children play from her window, fostering a deep and desperate longing for companionship. The core of her personality in Galaxy Angel X is a volatile and often self-destructive conflict between this profound need for friendship and a deep-seated sense of betrayal and vengefulness. She is described as sickly, socially inept, and tactless, which consistently sabotages her attempts to connect with others. Despite appearing polished and loving, her behavior is frequently counterproductive, leading her to vacillate wildly between wanting to befriend the Angel Troupe and wanting to destroy them. Her schemes for revenge are typically hampered by her own ineptitude and bad luck, often resulting in serious harm to herself rather than to her intended targets.

Her primary motivation for joining the military is the desire to find the friendship and social interaction she was denied while bed-ridden. The Angels paid her a visit in an attempt to cheer her up, during which she collapsed and begged to become one of them before she died. However, once she joins their ranks, her clumsiness leads to her being shunned by most of the Angels. Feeling rejected, she vows revenge and joins the rival Galaxy Twin-Stars. This creates her central role in the story as both a new member of the Angel Troupe and a one-sided antagonist. Milfeulle Sakuraba, in particular, continues to consider Chitose a good friend despite her murderous intentions, a contrast that fuels much of the comedy and pathos in her storyline. Her key relationships are defined by this dynamic of longing and antagonism; she craves the acceptance of the very people she plots against, who are largely either indifferent to her or have forgotten who she is.

In contrast to this anime portrayal, the source material from the games presents a very different version of the character. In the games, Chitose is a replacement for an original Angel member who left the team. She is characterized as a traditional, polite, and soft-spoken young woman who embodies the Yamato Nadeshiko archetype, the Japanese ideal of a refined and supportive woman skilled in traditional arts like archery and the tea ceremony. Her motivations in this version are respect and admiration for her late father, a military captain, and for the Angel Troupe. Highly intelligent, she scores the highest marks ever in the military exam, becoming an elite soldier and piloting the Emblem Frame Sharp Shooter, a unit designed for long-range sniping that suits her archery skills. This version of Chitose is extremely serious and diligent but lacks flexibility, sometimes coming across as overly formal and having difficulty adjusting to the unorthodox ways of the Angel Troupe. She also develops romantic feelings for their commander, Takuto, which she tries to suppress out of respect for her colleagues and her sense of propriety. Her arc in the games involves overcoming her rigid expectations and finding her place within the relaxed and chaotic team.
