Description
Gherta Hawksbee is a central figure in the Fantastic Children narrative, introduced as the determined and brilliant doctor leading the mysterious GED organization. Her work is heavily reliant on the old notes and scientific findings of a deceased scientist named Dr. Rontgen, whose legacy she has inherited. Despite the fact that Rontgen died long before her time and she never met him in her current life, Gherta finds herself experiencing an inexplicable and powerful attraction to his memory. This peculiar sentiment is the first hint of a profound secret buried within her identity, as she is in fact the reincarnation of a girl named Mel.

In a past existence, Mel was one of the Befort Children, a group of mysterious, ageless beings. Her tragic history began when she lost her memories, an event that led to her being captured by a man named Dumas. The trauma of that past life continues to echo into her present as Gherta. Dumas, having survived across the ages, persistently torments her, representing a dark, recurring shadow she cannot escape. This ongoing persecution is a key part of her motivation, as her past life’s suffering directly influences her actions in the present. Unlike another character named Conrad, who shares a similar past-life connection, Gherta is eventually able to fully recover her lost memories from her time as Mel. This crucial development is made possible with the help of a character named Soreto.

The recovery of her memories is the turning point in her character arc and her role in the larger story. No longer a scientist driven by vague, unexplained feelings, she becomes someone with a clear understanding of her true origins and the cosmic struggle at hand. With this restored knowledge, she makes a pivotal choice that defines her role in the climax of the story. She decides to leverage the full resources and power of the GED organization, the very group she leads, not for its original scientific purposes, but to actively aid the Children of Befort. This decision transforms her from a seemingly isolated researcher into a key ally, using her position and intellect to support those who share her original identity.

Her most defining relationship, therefore, is the inescapable link to her past self, Mel, and the tragic bond with Palza, whose reincarnation is Conrad. This former connection explains her inexplicable draw to Dr. Rontgen, who is implied to be a version of that same soul, as the powerful emotional ties from her existence as Mel have not faded with reincarnation. Her development is a journey from a state of subconscious longing and persecution to one of enlightened agency. She begins as a woman haunted by feelings she cannot explain and a mysterious stalker in Dumas, and grows into a decisive actor who confronts her past and uses her present power to fight for a just cause. Her notable abilities lie not in physical combat, but in her high intelligence, her authority as the head of the GED organization, and her deep understanding of the scientific principles that underpin the world's mysteries, all of which she ultimately deploys to change the course of fate.
