TV Special
Description
Goku Jr. is a descendant of the original Son Goku, appearing in the television special Dragon Ball GT: A Hero's Legacy, which is set one hundred years after the conclusion of the Dragon Ball GT series. He is the grandson of an elderly Pan, making him the great-great-great-great-grandson of Goku himself. Despite his powerful lineage, Goku Jr. begins his story as a stark contrast to his famous ancestor.
In terms of personality, Goku Jr. is initially a very timid and peace-loving boy who would rather avoid conflict than engage in it. He prefers to play and is reluctant to train, much to the frustration of his grandmother Pan. He is prone to tears and being bullied at school by a classmate named Puck and his gang, showing a distinct lack of the fighting spirit that defined his family line. This gentle and fearful nature is reminiscent of his great-grandfather, Gohan, before he was taken under the wing of Piccolo. However, beneath this timid exterior lies a deep well of latent power and the capacity for great courage.
His primary motivation is sparked by a crisis: when his beloved grandmother Pan is hospitalized due to an illness partly brought on by worry over his meek behavior, Goku Jr. decides to take action. Remembering the stories of the magical Dragon Balls, he sets out on a journey to Mount Paozu to find them and wish for her recovery. This quest becomes the central focus of his story, forcing him to confront his fears, overcome dangerous obstacles, and ultimately grow as a person.
Within the narrative of A Hero's Legacy, Goku Jr. serves as the protagonist. His role is to carry on the legacy of his ancestors by finding his own strength and courage. Throughout his journey, he forges a key relationship with his former bully, Puck, who initially follows him to mock him but eventually becomes a genuine friend and companion. Over the course of their travels, Goku Jr. learns important lessons about trust and bravery. His most significant encounter is with the spirit of his great-great-great-great-grandfather, Goku, at the old Son family house. This meeting provides him with encouragement and validation, helping him understand that true strength is not just about fighting, but about having the courage to stand up for what is right.
Goku Jr.'s development is marked by several key events. He transforms from a boy who runs from conflict into one who can stand his ground. A pivotal moment occurs when a demon named Lord Yao attacks a bear cub and its mother who had helped him. Witnessing this cruelty, Goku Jr. taps into his dormant Saiyan heritage and transforms into a Super Saiyan for the first time, a state previously thought impossible for one with such diluted Saiyan blood. This transformation allows him to easily defeat the demon, although he passes out from exhaustion afterward and has no memory of the event. Through his journey, he learns that his bravery, not the Dragon Ball itself, was what truly saved his grandmother and friend, signifying his growth from a timid boy into a hero in his own right.
Notable abilities that Goku Jr. displays include the power to access ki energy. He first unconsciously releases a ki blast that helps him and Puck escape from a demoness named Mamba. His most impressive feat, however, is his ability to achieve the Super Saiyan transformation, a power that multiplies his strength dramatically. Later, as seen in the final episode of Dragon Ball GT, Goku Jr. appears at the 64th World Martial Arts Tournament. By this time, he has gained full control over his Super Saiyan transformation, which he uses in a final match against a rival descendant, Vegeta Jr., proving that he has fully embraced his heritage and honed his fighting abilities.
