Description
Hikaru, whose full name is Hikaru Midou, is a prominent supporting character in the anime. She is introduced as one half of a pair of twin sisters who are deeply connected to the Morioka family. Hikaru and her sister Kaoru are both mikos, or shrine maidens, serving at the Midou family shrine. A long-standing arrangement exists between the two families, which has pledged Hikaru to Kouhei Morioka as his future bride when she grows up, a fact she reminds everyone of frequently, despite the considerable age difference between her and the photographer.
In terms of personality, Hikaru is energetic, outspoken, and carries a confident, sometimes brash, demeanor. She is far more forward and confrontational than her quieter twin, Kaoru. Hikaru has a sharp tongue and is not afraid to use it, often engaging in loud, petty arguments with the vampire girl Hazuki upon her arrival. Their rivalry is a constant source of humor, with Hikaru picking fights and teasing Hazuki by calling her a "mooch" or making snide comments about her cooking. She is easily irritated by Hazuki's antics and treats her as a competitor for Kouhei's attention.
Despite her quarrelsome nature, Hikaru is not malicious. Her behavior stems from a combination of her assertive personality and her genuine, albeit childlike, affection for Kouhei. She is fiercely loyal to her family and their obligations. Her role in the story is primarily that of a comedic foil to Hazuki, creating conflict and chaos within the household. However, she is also a capable ally. As a miko, Hikaru participates in the spiritual and combative side of the narrative, helping to defend the shrine and her family from supernatural threats, including the various vampires who come after Hazuki.
Her key relationships are defined by her pre-arranged engagements and her status as a twin. Her dynamic with Kouhei is one of one-sided pursuit, as she acts possessively of him while he largely tolerates her antics. Her relationship with Hazuki is the most volatile; it is a classic rivalry where they constantly bicker, though they are occasionally forced to cooperate. In a notable incident, the two accidentally share a kiss, much to the horror of both. Hikaru is also very close to her sister Kaoru, with the two often appearing and acting as a pair. While Kaoru is more reserved and pledged to Kouhei's cousin, Seiji, Hikaru takes the lead in their confrontations with Hazuki.
As the series progresses, Hikaru experiences some development, primarily in her role as a defender. She moves from being a simple source of household squabbling to an active participant in the serious battles against vampire assassins. While her personality remains domineering and playful, she shows moments of genuine concern for her family and can be serious when the situation demands it, even rushing into danger to help save others. Her notable abilities are tied to her position as a miko. She performs spiritual rites and can engage in combat using tools associated with shrine maidens, such as wards and sacred ropes, to fight off evil spirits and vampires. Her skills, combined with her determined nature, make her a valuable asset in the story's action sequences, even if she is often overshadowed by the primary supernatural characters.
