Description
Kaoru is one of the twin priestesses, or shrine maidens, who serve the Mido family, a clan of powerful spiritualists and exorcists. She is always seen alongside her older twin sister, Hikaru, with the two forming a nearly inseparable pair. Kaoru is distinguished by her long, dark hair and calmer, more reserved demeanor, which contrasts with Hikaru's more hot-blooded and assertive personality. The two young girls are pledged to different men within the Mido family; while Hikaru is devoted to the main protagonist, Kouhei, Kaoru is pledged to his cousin, Seiji.
Kaoru is introduced as a spiritual ally who comes to live at the Mido household, where she becomes a part of the chaotic daily life alongside Kouhei, Hazuki, and her sister. Her primary role in the story is that of a supporting character who aids in protecting Kouhei and Hazuki from various vampire threats, including the powerful Count Kinkel. Being part of the Mido clan, she is trained in spiritual arts and exorcism, making her a capable fighter against supernatural foes. However, her abilities are often played for comedic effect, particularly when she and Hikaru engage in petty rivalries with the vampire Hazuki.
Her personality is generally gentle, polite, and dutiful. She often acts as the more level-headed and mature counterpart to her sister, frequently trying to mediate the loud arguments that erupt between Hikaru and Hazuki. Despite this calm exterior, Kaoru shares her sister's intense loyalty and devotion to the Mido family. She is deeply serious about her duties and her pledge to Seiji, showing a protective and caring side towards him. At the same time, she participates in the comedic competition with Hazuki for Kouhei's attention and affection, though she typically does so with less jealous outbursts than Hikaru, instead exhibiting a quietly competitive streak.
Kaoru possesses spiritual powers common to the Mido family, allowing her to sense and combat evil spirits and vampires. She can create and use ofuda, or talismans, for sealing and purification rituals. In a notable display of the series' supernatural lore, Kaoru is revealed to have a dual nature. She is not fully human, possessing the ability to transform into a catgirl, complete with feline ears, a tail, and sharp claws, which grants her enhanced physical abilities in combat. This transformation is often linked to her emotional state or the consumption of blood, blurring the lines between her role as a monster hunter and the creatures she fights.
As the story progresses, Kaoru's relationship with the main cast evolves from simple rivalry to a more complex familial bond. While she and Hikaru initially view Hazuki as a rival for Kouhei's affection, they eventually come to a mutual understanding and grudging respect for one another, often working together to face greater common enemies. Her development is tied to her sense of duty and her growing connections with those she protects. In later story arcs, particularly in the manga continuation, Kaoru faces significant peril, such as being turned into a servant of the vampire Freya, which forces the protagonists to confront the limits of their powers and the true nature of their bonds with her, adding a layer of tragedy and urgency to her character.
