Description
Anastasia Yurievna Cocolova, almost always called Anya, is a young mage and a significant supporting character in Negima!. She is best known for being the childhood friend of the protagonist, Negi Springfield. A year older than Negi, Anya is also a graduate of the Merdiana Magic Academy in Wales, where the two grew up together, making her one of the few people his age with whom he shares a close, informal bond.

In terms of personality, Anya is characterized by her strong-willed, fiery, and competitive nature, which is fitting given her magical specialty. She is often seen frowning, particularly when she is frustrated with Negi, and has a distinct grumpy and irritable side. Despite this, she cares deeply for Negi, though she has a difficult time expressing these feelings directly, often displaying classic tsundere traits. One of her most prominent and often comedic characteristics is her deep-seated insecurity regarding her own physical development. She is notably flat-chested and holds a strong, immediate dislike for any of the well-endowed girls in Negi's class, especially Asuna Kagurazaka, whom she sees as a rival. In contrast, she quickly befriends girls with a similar stature, such as Nodoka Miyazaki and Yue Ayase, taking an immediate liking to them.

Anya's primary motivation, especially in her early appearances, is her concern for Negi. After graduating, she is assigned to work as a fortune teller in London, a task she finds ordinary and perhaps beneath her ambitions. When Negi fails to return to Wales for his holidays, she travels to Japan with the intention of bringing him back home. Upon arriving, however, she is shocked to discover that he has not only formed seven different magical contracts with his female students but has also far surpassed her in magical ability. This realization is a major blow to her pride, as she had always been the one to look out for and protect him. Her motivations shift from simply retrieving him to a desire to understand his growth and prove her own worth, eventually leading her to join his group on their dangerous journey to the Magic World.

Her role in the story is that of a rival and a link to Negi's past. While she initially appears as an antagonist of sorts, her purpose is to challenge Negi's new life and relationships, forcing both him and the audience to reflect on how much he has changed. In the Magic World arc, she becomes a member of the Ala Alba party, though her role is somewhat diminished. Upon arriving in the Magic World, the group is scattered, and Anya is captured by the primary antagonist, Fate Averruncus. While imprisoned, she is forced to wear a maid outfit and, despite her fierce resistance, is relegated to a supportive role, caring for a depressed Asuna and witnessing key revelations about the world's nature from within her cell before being rescued.

The key relationships in Anya's life revolve around Negi. She harbors romantic feelings for him that she struggles to articulate, and her jealousy is a constant source of tension and humor. Her relationship with Asuna is particularly fraught, stemming from Asuna's close partnership with Negi and her more developed figure. Conversely, she forms strong, supportive friendships with the quieter and less physically developed Nodoka and Yue. Her interactions with the vampire Evangeline McDowell are characterized by sheer terror, as she is a legendary figure from the magical world whom Anya is not prepared to face.

Throughout her development, Anya is forced to confront her own stagnation. She arrives in Japan believing she is Negi's senior and protector, only to find he no longer needs her in that capacity. This revelation humbles her, and while she does not undergo a dramatic power-up like other characters, her decision to stay and fight in the Magic World rather than retreat to Wales marks a significant step in her maturity. In the alternate continuity of the Negima!? anime, her role is drastically expanded, as her jealousy over Negi leads her to steal a dangerous artifact called the Star Crystal, which corrupts her and nearly destroys everything Negi holds dear. After being saved, she is transferred into his class as student number 32 as punishment. In the alternate manga Negima!? Neo, she similarly enrolls in Mahora Academy.

Regarding notable abilities, Anya is a skilled practitioner of fire-based offensive magic. Her spells often involve direct physical attacks, such as a powerful diving kick or flaming punch. However, her control is not always perfect, and she has been known to accidentally set her own clothes or hair on fire during combat. Her magical power, while respectable for a recent graduate, is ultimately far surpassed by Negi's after his intense training and unique power-ups, which becomes a central point of her character arc.
