Description
Ichika Tachibana is a fourteen-year-old Japanese middle school student living in the historical city of Kamakura. Her life takes an unexpected turn on the day before summer vacation when a decorative charm attached to her cell phone, a gift from her tutor, mysteriously ends up inside a large mirror in her school's oldest building. Upon retrieving it, she encounters a girl named Manatsu Kuroki within the glass, who steps out and requests Ichika's help with her summer homework—a task that involves using the power of twelve spirits known as Djinn.

At the beginning of the story, Ichika is characterized as a shy, polite, and dutiful girl who is honest to a fault and always strives to do the right thing. Her friends often playfully tease her for being a straight-laced stickler, and she is easily frightened, possessing a particular terror of ghosts. As a student, she is tutored in different subjects by two brothers; she has developed a romantic crush on her older tutor, Sei Tōdō, who teaches her literature and social studies.

Ichika's initial motivation is simply to accommodate Manatsu, who becomes a secret houseguest, leading to a series of small lies to her parents and friends. At first, using the Djinn's powers is an exhilarating experience, allowing her to transform into different magical costumes and perform supernatural feats for mundane tasks. However, each use of the charm comes with a heavy psychological cost. As she continues to summon the elemental spirits, she begins to perceive the world through their eyes, which gradually erodes her innocence and moral compass. She finds herself capable of lying, acting on jealous impulses, and developing a cynical view of humanity. In several disturbing instances, her inner darkness manifests through the Djinn's power, leading her to nearly harm others, such as causing a woman with allergies to go into anaphylactic shock or using lightning to cause a city-wide blackout out of envy.

Her key relationships are central to her emotional journey. Her bond with the cheerful and mysterious Manatsu is the most significant, as the two balance each other despite their opposite personalities. As Ichika's trials become more harrowing, she begins to blame Manatsu for her suffering, though it is revealed that Manatsu truly cares for her and ultimately tries to protect her. She shares a close, if somewhat distant, camaraderie with her school friends—the brash Satsuki, the gentle Keiko, and the spiritually perceptive Michiru—who often provide a tether to her normal life. Her feelings for her tutor Sei also become a source of pain and jealousy, especially when she suspects a connection between him and the enigmatic woman Saya, who is secretly a powerful Djinn overseeing Ichika's trial.

Ichika's development is the core of the narrative, representing a classic coming-of-age story that takes a dark turn. The girl who detested lying finds herself entangled in a web of deception. The power of the Djinn, intended to bring self-awareness, instead leads her to despair, causing her to stop eating and, at her lowest point, contemplate suicide to escape the judgment she is trapped in. The climax forces her to confront a sadistic choice: to destroy all of humanity or to sacrifice herself. In a final act of defiance, she refuses both options, and though the confrontation is resolved only through the sacrifice of Manatsu, Ichika emerges transformed. The experience forces her to grow beyond her innocence, but through her refusal to succumb to hatred or self-destruction, she accepts the complexities of life and chooses to move forward.

Her notable abilities are tied directly to the yin-yang charm. By drawing on its power, she can summon one of twelve Djinn, which are based on natural elements and abstract concepts. Each summoning triggers a transformation sequence, adorning her in a unique costume designed by a different artist. While using this power, she gains abilities such as flight, control over the elements, and the ability to see hidden truths. However, a key trait of her powers is the loss of control; when overwhelmed by powerful negative emotions like jealousy or anger, her eyes begin to glow red, and the Djinn's power can manifest involuntarily, often with destructive consequences.
