Description
Gang Minji, originally named Sakura Mikan, is the central protagonist of the story. She is introduced as a ten-year-old girl who lived a simple, happy life in the countryside with her loving grandfather. Her ordinary world is turned upside down when her best friend transfers to a mysterious academy in the city, prompting Mikan to run away from home to follow her. This impulsive journey leads her to discover the existence of the Alice Academy and her own place within it.

Mikan’s personality is defined by her remarkable optimism and boundless energy, which stand in stark contrast to the more reserved and intellectual nature of her best friend. She is fundamentally good-natured and caring, but her earnestness is often complicated by a noticeable clumsiness that frequently lands her in trouble. Despite this, she possesses an indomitable spirit and a strong will, never hesitating to stand up for what she believes is right or to protect those she cares about, regardless of the consequences. Her sincerity and refusal to give up are key traits that allow her to gradually win over classmates who initially viewed her with skepticism. Her primary motivation throughout the story is her deep devotion to her friends, most especially her desire to remain close to her best friend, which compels her to overcome countless challenges at the academy.

Within the story’s world, Mikan holds a unique and significant role due to her exceptional abilities. Her primary power is the Alice of Nullification, a rare ability that allows her to cancel out or negate the special powers of other Alice users when she is in close proximity to them. This power is initially unstable, working most effectively when she is driven by powerful emotions to protect someone important to her. As the narrative progresses, she discovers she possesses a second, even rarer ability called the Stealing Alice, which she inherited from her mother. This power enables her to actually take other people’s Alices, transforming them into small, colored stones. Because of these rare powers, she is closely monitored by the academy’s administration, initially placed in the Special Ability Class before later being transferred to the Dangerous Ability Class, where she becomes a favorite of the Elementary School Principal.

Her key relationships are central to the plot. Her friendship with her best friend is the emotional core of the series, one that grows even stronger as they face the academy’s trials together. She also forms a complex and significant bond with a boy named Natsume. They start as adversaries, but Mikan’s relentless concern for him gradually develops into a deep, mutual affection that becomes a major focus of the story. She also becomes a close friend to Natsume’s best friend, Ruka, who likewise develops romantic feelings for her, creating a subtle emotional triangle.

Throughout the narrative, Mikan undergoes substantial development. Initially an outsider mocked for her lack of a known ability and her low star ranking, she proves her worth through her actions and unwavering integrity, eventually earning the admiration of many who once doubted her. She matures as she uncovers the darker secrets of the academy and learns about the tragic fates of her parents. In a climactic turn, after losing her own Alice, she is forced to leave the academy, and her memories are erased to protect her from the outside world, sending her back to live peacefully with her grandfather. However, the story’s epilogue indicates that she eventually reunites with Natsume, and the two continue their relationship into the future, ultimately getting married.
