Description
M.O.M.O., whose name is an acronym for Multiple Observative Mimetic Organicus and who is also known as MOMO Mizrahi, is a central character in Xenosaga: The Animation. She is a prototype 100-series Observational Realian, a class of artificial human, created by the scientist Joachim Mizrahi and his wife Juli Mizrahi. M.O.M.O. was constructed in the physical likeness of the couple’s deceased biological daughter, Sakura, and was given the appearance and personality of a twelve-year-old girl. Her primary purpose was to serve as a specialized observer capable of perceiving and making contact with the Gnosis, a mysterious and hostile alien life form. As a Realian, she does not age or change from her manufactured form.

By nature, M.O.M.O. is kind-hearted, compassionate, and deeply innocent. She values her own identity and dislikes being referred to by her model number, preferring to be called by her acronym because it makes her feel more human. Her motivations are driven by a wish to fulfill the intentions of her creator, whom she views as a father, and to gain the acceptance and approval of Juli Mizrahi, whom she sees as a mother. She carries a deep emotional need to be recognized as a person in her own right and not merely a replacement for Sakura.

M.O.M.O. occupies a pivotal role in the story because she carries within her subconscious the Y-Data, the research and findings of Joachim Mizrahi concerning the Zohar, a powerful artifact. This makes her the target of multiple factions, including the U-TIC Organization and the manipulative Albedo Piazzolla. Her journey begins with her imprisonment by U-TIC, from which she is rescued by the cyborg Ziggurat 8, whom she gives the nickname Ziggy. This rescue sets the events of the series in motion as she joins the crew of the starship Elsa and becomes intertwined with the larger conflict. Later, she is kidnapped by Albedo, who attempts to forcibly extract the Y-Data from her, an ordeal that nearly destroys her mind.

Her key relationships include a strong father-daughter bond with Ziggy, who becomes her dedicated protector and a stabilizing presence in her life. She also shares a strained but evolving connection with Juli Mizrahi. Initially, Juli sees M.O.M.O. only as a painful reminder of Sakura and struggles to accept her as a true daughter. Over time, through shared hardship and the intervention of Ziggy, Juli begins to recognize M.O.M.O. as her own person, leading to a more genuine familial warmth. M.O.M.O. also forms bonds with the other members of the Elsa crew, including Shion Uzuki, and she demonstrates loyalty and maturity beyond her apparent age.

Throughout the series, M.O.M.O. undergoes a gradual emotional development. She starts as a captive and a sought-after object but grows into a more active and self-possessed individual. Her desire to be treated as human and her efforts to find her own place in the world shape her interactions. She learns to assert her own will, even to the point of cutting off her neural pathways to prevent her data from being exploited, an act that leaves her unconscious and requires the party to enter her subconscious to save her.

In terms of combat abilities, M.O.M.O. is an Ether user, a form of energy manipulation. She wields short magical rods that allow her to fight at close range or fire laser-like beams from a distance. She also has the capability to disrupt enemy sensors and automated weapons through the use of the Hilbert Effect. Her role in battle is primarily supportive, acting as a healer and a magic-oriented fighter. She can transform into a more powerful form, with her change in costume altering her access to different Ether abilities for a limited time.
