Description
Kazunobu Yanagi is a male officer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force assigned to the Aegis destroyer Mirai in the anime Zipang. He holds the rank of Petty Officer First Class and serves as a member of the ship's navigation department, making him part of the regular crew at the time the vessel is carried back in time to the Pacific War era.

Yanagi's defining trait is his deep passion for military history. He is portrayed as an extreme war-history enthusiast with detailed knowledge of the weapons, warships, aircraft, and battles of World War II, and his familiarity is so fine-grained that the ship's executive officer, Yosuke Kadomatsu, remarks that Yanagi knows even the number of moles on Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's body. Because of this expertise, Yanagi frequently serves as the crew's explainer, identifying the historically significant vessels and aircraft the Mirai encounters and clarifying the operations and tactics of the period.

In peacetime, Yanagi's practical skills as a serviceman are shown to be modest; during an exercise he is knocked out by his fellow crew member Kouhei Oguri with relative ease, suggesting that his strengths lie more in book knowledge than in combat readiness. After the time slip, however, he becomes a dependable figure who is called upon for dangerous tasks, often operating alongside Kadomatsu.

Yanagi's motivation is not to alter the past. Despite his consuming interest in the war, he shows little desire to change the course of history and instead stands with the crew members who believe their priority should be preserving the timeline. This sense of loyalty is especially evident when Kadomatsu leaves the Mirai; Yanagi leaves the ship with him, placing his trust in his superior and accepting the dangers that come with that choice.

Over the course of the story, Yanagi develops from a peacetime sailor who knew the war mainly through study into an active participant in the conflict, applying his historical knowledge in real combat situations. His primary contribution to the crew is his encyclopedic understanding of the era's military technology and strategy, which helps the Mirai's personnel understand and respond to the threats of a world far outside their own time.
