Description
Lt. Commander Takumi Kusaka is a 32-year-old officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. He is introduced in the anime Zipang when his courier plane is shot down during the Battle of Midway, and he is rescued by the crew of the JDS Mirai, a modern Japanese destroyer that has been transported back in time to 1942. This rescue sets in motion a chain of events that fundamentally alters the course of the war.
Kusaka is a highly intelligent and charismatic officer, but his personality is defined by a deep ideological conflict. He is disillusioned with both the militarism of the imperial Japanese government and what he perceives as the shame and weakness of Japan's post-war defeat. His core motivation is to seize the opportunity presented by his encounter with the Mirai to forge a new, powerful, and undefeated Japan, which he calls Zipang. He believes that the humanism and idealism of the Mirai's executive officer, Yosuke Kadomatsu, are noble but ultimately impractical luxuries in the brutal reality of war. Kusaka is willing to sacrifice a great many lives to achieve his vision of a stronger Japan.
In the story, Kusaka evolves from a rescued survivor into the primary antagonist. After recovering, he uses his knowledge of the future, gleaned from interactions with the Mirai crew, to pursue an independent agenda. He resigns his commission in the Imperial Navy and becomes a rogue agent. His role expands as he travels to Manchukuo, where he plans to assassinate Emperor Puyi to create chaos and secure the region's resources for his new nation. He also orchestrates a complex plot to steal uranium from the Nazi nuclear program, using a failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler as a distraction. His ultimate goal is to build an atomic bomb and secure Zipang's dominance.
His key relationship is with Yosuke Kadomatsu, the man who saved his life. Kusaka respects Kadomatsu's intelligence and moral compass, but fundamentally disagrees with his approach. Kadomatsu sees Kusaka as a dangerous threat who must be stopped, leading to a tense rivalry that drives much of the story's conflict. Kusaka also interacts with other Mirai crew members, such as Captain Saburo Umezu, who tries and fails to stop him, and Gunnery Officer Masayuki Kikuchi, who becomes sympathetic to Kusaka's vision.
Throughout the series, Kusaka develops from a man with an abstract idea into a ruthless leader willing to commit extreme acts. He dies during the climactic battle in 1944, when the battleship Yamato is sunk by the Mirai. His final act is to convince Kadomatsu, now stranded in the past, to carry on the dream of creating Zipang. Kusaka's notable abilities include his sharp strategic mind, his persuasive leadership, and his complete dedication to his cause, which allows him to outmaneuver both his own superiors and the determined crew of the Mirai.
