Description
Jura Basil Elden serves as the secondary leader of the Dread Team aboard the ship Nirvana. She originates from the planet Mejere and is one of three pilots whose Dread fighters were exposed to a mysterious light at the beginning of the journey, granting her machine the unique ability to merge with a male Vanguard unit. She has green eyes, blood type AB, and stands 174 cm tall. Jura typically carries a rapier at her side, though she rarely has the opportunity to demonstrate her skill with the weapon.
As a person, Jura is defined by a strong vanity and a proud, almost obsessive care for her long blonde hair. She possesses a vain and somewhat superficial nature, often seeking attention and desiring to be part of anything she considers magnificent or glamorous. Her initial attempts to combine her fighter with Hibiki’s Vanguard are driven less by tactical necessity and more by a wish to create a beautiful and impressive new machine, leading to her disappointment when her combined form instead resembles a red crab. Despite her immaturity and occasional naivety, she is fundamentally an optimist with a bright outlook on life, and she tries to be reliable when the situation truly demands it.
Jura is highly dependent on her close companion Barnette, which contributes to her inexperience as a leader, as she tends to rely on others for support. The leadership dynamic is a key source of tension, as she is technically second-in-command of the Dread force but is seen as less skilled than the primary leader Meia, who rarely allows Jura to gain practical experience in a command role. Her relationship with Barnette is notably intimate, with the series suggesting a deep romantic bond between them; they are shown living together, and Barnette gives Jura a ring for Christmas. While Jura spends a considerable amount of time attempting to convince Hibiki to have a child with her, these schemes often involve or are supported by Barnette, who participates in her plans. She also has a competitive but ultimately cooperative relationship with fellow pilot Dita and the other members of the crew.
Throughout the story, Jura demonstrates notable character development. While initially appearing solely as a selfish and attention-seeking individual, she proves her worth as a valuable comrade who comes through in critical moments. She is capable of taking command effectively when Meia is unavailable, leading the team through battles. Following a significant loss during the second stage of the series, Jura becomes noticeably more mature and dependable, shedding some of her more frivolous tendencies.
In combat, Jura pilots a red Dread fighter. When merged with Hibiki’s Vanguard, it creates the Vandread Jura, also known as the Red Claw. This mecha resembles a red crab with long, flexible claws and several green discs that orbit its body. Rather than being an offensive powerhouse, the Vandread Jura is designed for defense. Its primary ability involves using the orbiting discs to generate incredibly powerful shields that can cover objects ranging from a single ship to an entire planet. These discs can also be fired as individual cannons to attack multiple enemies from various angles or used to manipulate and expel large objects, such as planetary water supplies, as projectiles.
