Description
Meia Gisborn serves as the stoic and highly capable leader of the Mejeer pirate crew's Dread Team aboard the ship Nirvana. At nineteen years of age, she holds the responsible position of lead pilot, a role that demands quick thinking, sharp tactical skills, and a deep concern for the safety of her squad members.

Her background is marked by a profound childhood trauma on her home planet of Mejere. As a young girl, a critical system failure in her living unit forced a mass evacuation. In the ensuing chaos, Meia lost her mother, who was left behind due to limited capacity on the evacuation ships; Meia witnessed the explosion that claimed her mother's life. This tragedy was compounded by public scandal and scrutiny after her "Fama" (one of her mothers) abandoned the family, leaving Meia to be raised by her remaining mother. After the explosion, she was left completely alone. This led her to a desperate life on the streets, where she survived through gang activity and street fights, carrying a deep-seated insecurity and a diminished will to live. Her path changed when the pirate captain Magno Vivan recruited her, tossing a laser ring to the despondent girl and giving her a new purpose.

Personality-wise, Meia is initially presented as a morose, silent, and cold individual who rarely smiles and speaks only when necessary, whether issuing orders or reporting to the captain. Her unfeeling exterior is a direct defense mechanism born from her bitter past, as she avoids forming close bonds with others for fear of being hurt again. This coldness is most visibly expressed as a deep-seated hatred for men, a feeling so strong that she feels disgusted with herself whenever she requires help from a male, specifically Hibiki Tokai. Beneath her harsh demeanor, however, lies a heavy sense of responsibility. As the Dread Team's chief, she closely monitors apprentice pilots and has even used her own mecha as a decoy to protect her teammates. An interesting and more vulnerable facet of her personality is a secret case of claustrophobia, known only to a few.

Meia's primary motivation throughout the story evolves from a simple desire for strength and self-reliance to a deeper goal of protecting her found family aboard the Nirvana. Her initial wish to be so strong that nothing could hurt her gradually softens as she learns to trust others. Her key relationships are central to this development. Her most significant dynamic is with Hibiki Tokai, the first male she comes to respect. Despite her initial disgust, she eventually notices similarities in their strong spirits and their desire to prove their existence, developing a bond of mutual respect. Captain Magno Vivan serves as a maternal figure and mentor who gave Meia a second chance at life. Her relationships with her fellow Dread pilots, particularly the energetic Dita, also evolve from professional concern to genuine camaraderie.

Meia undergoes a notable character development arc. Over time, the warm and chaotic atmosphere of the Nirvana, combined with the influence of Kahlua and Misty, helps her soften. Her deep-seated hatred for men fades, and she learns to express her true feelings. By the end of the series, she has changed into a kinder, more open person, to the surprise of those who knew her before. She also comes to terms with her past, placing a repaired family photograph in a treasured jewelry box, symbolizing her acceptance of her parents' love and her own painful history.

In terms of notable abilities, Meia is an exceptionally skilled mecha pilot, commanding the fastest Dread in the Nirvana's fleet. Her personal weapon is a Laser Ring, given to her by Captain Magno. As one of three pilots exposed to the mysterious Paexis' light, her Dread can merge with Hibiki's Vanguard to form a powerful Vandread unit known as the "White Wing." This silver, eagle-shaped mecha is the fastest in the series and represents the concept of speed. Its primary form of attack is a devastating high-velocity ram that can pierce through almost any enemy unit.
