Description
Keith Laijie is a character from the Moonrace, the civilization that has lived on the Moon for centuries and seeks to return to Earth. He is a seventeen-year-old boy who, at the age of fifteen, descended to the planet along with his friends Loran Cehack and Fran Doll. Their mission was to serve as advance scouts, assessing the Earth’s environment and its people in preparation for the Diana Counter’s full-scale return operation.

Upon arriving on Earth, Keith settled in the city of Nocis, the capital of the Inglessa territory. He took up work as an apprentice at a bakery called the Donkey Bakery, where he learned the craft of breadmaking. It was there that he fell in love with Verlaine, the daughter of the bakery’s owner. While his friend Loran became deeply entangled in the military conflicts between the Earth Militia and the Moonrace, Keith focused on his civilian life. When the war damaged the bakery and injured its owner, Keith took initiative, selling a personal vehicle (a FLAT mobile suit) to raise funds and rebuild the business into a bread factory of his own.

Keith’s central motivation is to survive and build a future on Earth, but his actions carry a deeper pacifist philosophy. Rather than aligning with either side in the conflict, he commits to a strict neutrality. He begins selling his bread to both Earthlings and soldiers of the Diana Counter without discrimination, effectively turning the area around his factory into a neutral zone where fighting ceases to allow for commerce. His belief is that economic interdependence and simple acts of shared humanity, like trading goods, can bridge the divide between the two warring populations and contribute more to lasting peace than violence. He actively hires people from both the Earth and the Moonrace who have fled the fighting, further demonstrating his commitment to coexistence.

This pragmatic stance initially creates tension with his fellow scout Fran Doll, who views his willingness to trade with the enemy as a betrayal or a purely profit-driven scheme. However, Keith is able to articulate that his goal of creating a sanctuary for both sides is fundamentally aligned with the ideals of peace that Fran and Loran are fighting for. Although Keith contemplates joining the militia as a mobile suit pilot at one point during the war, he is dissuaded by others who remind him that his true contribution to peace lies in his work as a baker, not as a soldier.

Over the course of the story, Keith matures from a simple apprentice into a resourceful and principled business owner. His key relationship is with Verlaine, the baker’s daughter, whom he eventually marries after the war. Together they have a child and open a large, successful bakery, securing a happy and prosperous life on Earth. As a Moonrace boy who naturalized as an Earthling, Keith represents the possibility of a peaceful future grounded in everyday acts of creation and trade rather than political struggle or armed conflict. His notable ability is not combat prowess but his skill as a baker, which becomes a powerful tool for creating harmony and a neutral space between two hostile factions.
