Description
Agrippa Maintner, also known as Agrippa Maintainer, is a significant antagonist in the anime Turn A Gundam. He serves as the chancellor to Queen Dianna Soreil and is the hereditary governor of the Moonrace's cryogenic stasis chambers, a role passed down through his family for generations. As a prominent political figure on the Moon, he leads a moderate faction that initially opposes the return to Earth, fearing the reawakening of the Moonrace's long-dormant fighting instincts.
Agrippa is characterized as a scheming and cowardly individual who often hides his insecurity behind a formal and dignified demeanor. He is prone to panic and raising his voice when faced with unexpected developments, a trait that reveals his small-minded and fearful nature. His primary motivation is the preservation of order on the Moon as he defines it, driven by a deep terror of the Dark History, the ancient record of humanity's self-destruction. He genuinely believes that allowing the Moonrace to return to Earth will trigger a violent resurgence of their ancestral combativeness, leading to a repeat of past catastrophes. However, this fear is inextricably linked with his own ambition for power. When Dianna proceeds with the Earth Return Operation, he seizes the opportunity to consolidate control, staging a coup to occupy the White Palace and take over the lunar government.
His role in the story is that of a primary antagonist and a political obstacle. Agrippa plots to assassinate Queen Dianna, viewing her as someone already corrupted by the fighting spirit he so fears. He aims to isolate the Moon from the events on Earth, intending to control all information about the ensuing conflict to keep the wider Moonrace populace docile. In a radical plan to purify lunar society, he seeks to exile any individuals he deems warlike or criminal to the Earth's surface. To achieve his goals, he forms a tense alliance with Gym Gingham, the leader of the Moon's military forces, though he personally despises and fears Gym as the very embodiment of the warrior spirit he wishes to suppress.
Agrippa’s key relationships are largely political and fraught with tension. As Dianna’s chancellor, he is a subordinate who betrays his queen, attempting to have her killed and usurp her throne. His relationship with Gym Gingham is one of mutual convenience and distrust; he relies on Gym's military power but is ultimately manipulated by him. His most trusted subordinate is Mim Midgard, whom he sends to Earth to carry out the assassination of Dianna. The character shows little development beyond his initial scheming, as his fear and ambition blind him to the consequences of his actions. In a final confrontation, after his plans collapse and he is captured, he is shot and killed by his own agent, Mim Midgard, in a desperate act that prevents him from being executed by the queen he betrayed. Agrippa does not pilot a mobile suit or possess any notable combat abilities; his power is strictly political, rooted in his hereditary authority and his control over information and the Moon's infrastructure.
