Hiroya Ishimaru

Description
Hiroya Ishimaru was a Japanese actor and voice actor, born Shinji Ishide on February 12, 1941, in Miyagi Prefecture. He retired from voice acting in April 2023, concluding a career that spanned over six decades.

Ishimaru was most famously associated with two iconic roles. He was the definitive voice of Kouji Kabuto, the protagonist of the pioneering super robot anime Mazinger Z (1972), a role he reprised in numerous sequels, films, and original video animations for decades. He was also the long-standing and exclusive Japanese dubbing voice for actor Jackie Chan, providing the Japanese-language voice for Chan's characters in virtually all his films for over forty years. This dedication was recognized by the Guinness World Records for the longest career as a dedicated voice actor for one performer.

His extensive anime filmography is heavily rooted in the super robot and science fiction genres of the 1970s and 1980s. Beyond his signature role in Mazinger Z, he played Kenji Asuka in Six God Combination Godmars, Jan Kugo in Science Fiction Saiyuki Starzinger, and Cosmodart Nasca in Space Battleship Yamato II. In the Transformers franchise, he voiced Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime in The Transformers: The Headmasters. Later anime roles demonstrated his range and longevity, including the gentle giant Apachai Hopachai in KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple and the powerful Kozuki Oden in One Piece, a role reportedly requested by the series' creator, Eiichiro Oda, who was a fan of Ishimaru.

Ishimaru's work extended into video games and tokusatsu. He was the voice of Lei Wulong in the Tekken series from Tekken 3 onwards, a role that utilized his noted fluency in English. He also provided the voice for Ultraman Taro across numerous projects in the Ultra Series for nearly four decades. He was a founding member of the talent agency Production Baobab.
