Description
Marika Ukita is a classmate of the protagonist Asumi Kamogawa at the Tokyo Space School, where she is one of the five main students in the astronaut training program. She initially appears as a loner who treats her peers coldly, a demeanor she justifies by reflecting on a difficult childhood that consisted largely of studying in isolation. Her relationship with her father is strained and controlling; he pressures her to emulate the original Marika Ukita, a deceased individual of whom Marika is later revealed to be a genetic clone. In the manga, this cloning background is a central aspect of her story, though in the anime it is only briefly touched upon. Marika also suffers from a hidden illness that she conceals from her classmates. Despite her reserved and distant exterior, she is highly intelligent and capable, excelling in academic subjects such as physics and mechanics, which proves useful during training exercises. Her motivation for attending the space school is tied to her father's wishes rather than a personal passion for spaceflight, but she nonetheless commits herself to the program. Over the course of the series, Marika undergoes significant development as she gradually opens up to those around her. She moves into Asumi's dormitory following a fight with her father, and through her interactions with Asumi, Kei Oumi, Shu Suzuki, and Shinnosuke Fuchuya, she begins to form her first genuine friendships. Her bond with Asumi, in particular, helps her confront and cope with the pain of her past. Marika's abilities are primarily intellectual and analytical, and her growth is marked by a slow but meaningful shift from isolation and distrust toward connection and cooperation with her peers.
