Description
Lion, also referred to as Lion-san or Mr. Lion, is a central figure in the anime Twin Spica. He is the ghost of an astronaut who was a crew member aboard the Lion, Japan's first crewed spaceflight mission, which launched in 2010. The mission ended in disaster when the rocket's booster fuel caught fire seventy-two seconds after liftoff, causing the craft to crash into the city of Yuigahama and resulting in numerous civilian casualties. The astronaut died in this accident.
He first appears to the protagonist, Asumi Kamogawa, when she is six years old and struggling with the recent death of her mother, who had been comatose since being injured in the same crash. Lion introduces himself as a ghost and wears a large lion mask that covers his entire head; this appearance is the reason Asumi gives him the name Lion-san. Only Asumi can see or hear him.
Lion's personality is gentle, patient, and wise. He serves as a mentor and confidant to Asumi, nurturing her interest in space and spaceflight from a young age. He speaks to her in a calm and reassuring manner, offering encouragement during moments of self-doubt and guiding her toward her dream of becoming a rocket pilot. His motivations are tied to his own unfulfilled dream of reaching space; by fostering Asumi's ambition, he passes on that dream to the next generation.
In the story, Lion acts as a supernatural guide and emotional anchor for Asumi. He is present during key moments of her childhood, including the difficult time after her mother's funeral, and continues to appear throughout her training at the Tokyo Space School. Asumi often consults him when she faces personal or academic challenges, and he provides perspective that helps her persevere.
Lion's primary relationship is with Asumi, but his past includes a connection to the tragedy that shapes the entire narrative. He is the spirit of a man named Takano, who was one of the astronauts on the Lion mission. His relationship with Asumi is built on trust and shared aspiration; he becomes a surrogate teacher and a source of comfort.
Lion's character develops through his interactions with Asumi as she grows from a grieving child into a determined young astronaut candidate. While he is a ghost and does not change in a physical sense, his role shifts from that of a comforter to a steady presence who helps Asumi find her own strength. His own backstory is gradually revealed, showing the human experiences and relationships he left behind.
Lion's notable abilities include his invisibility to everyone except Asumi and his apparent freedom to appear at various locations. He can interact with the physical world to a limited degree, such as helping Asumi carry her mother's ashes to the beach. He demonstrates deep knowledge of astronomy and space science, which he shares with Asumi to encourage her education. His presence itself serves a narrative function, bridging the story's supernatural element with its realistic depiction of space training and personal growth.
