Description
Gasser, known in the original Japanese version as Heppokomaru, is a teenage boy who joins the main group of rebels fighting against the oppressive Hair Hunt Troops. Physically, he is a short individual, standing 161 centimeters tall and weighing around 50 to 55 kilograms, with spiky white hair and gold or red eyes. The name Heppokomaru carries meaning, as heppoko translates to "untrained" or "unskilled," while maru is a traditional suffix for a samurai's name, reflecting his identity as a young warrior still developing his abilities.
Personality-wise, Gasser serves as one of the group's few sensible and grounded members, often acting as a straight man alongside the character Beauty. He is generally quiet and reserved, frequently reacting with shock or exasperation at the bizarre and nonsensical antics of his allies. Despite his serious demeanor, he has moments where he joins in on the group's strange behavior or acts oddly on his own. He holds a deep admiration for the hero Bo-bobo, respectfully referring to him as "Mr. Bo-bobo," and is protective of Beauty, for whom he develops romantic feelings that he is too shy to express.
Gasser's primary motivation stems from the destruction of his hometown, Puu Puu City, at the hands of Captain Battleship and the Hair Hunt Troops. He initially begins following Bo-bobo in hopes of avenging his home and later formally joins the team after demonstrating his skills and rescuing Beauty. His role in the narrative is often that of a commentator on the surreal events, but he also participates in battles and combos with other members of the group. He has a notable rivalry with the flamboyant Don Patch, who despises Gasser, leading to frequent comedic conflicts between them.
Over the course of the story, Gasser undergoes several significant transformations. A key aspect of his character is the collar he wears around his neck, which regulates his immense power. When the collar is removed, he transforms into Baby Gasser, a powerful but childish version of himself that loses rational thought and acts like an infant, often carrying a rose in his mouth. Later in the sequel series Shinsetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, Gasser is manipulated into becoming the commander of Neo A-Block Base for the Neo Maruhage Empire. After consuming a powerful pill, he enters a demonic awakened form with horns, claws, and red eyes, becoming extremely evil and merciless. He is eventually defeated and returned to normal by his friends, after which he tearfully rejoins them.
Gasser's notable abilities are centered on his unique martial art, the True Fart Fist, known in the English adaptation as the Fist of the Back Wind. This technique allows him to expel powerful and noxious gases from his body, which can be used to create projectile attacks, propel himself through the air, or incapacitate enemies with their terrible stench. As he grows stronger, he masters this style, evolving it into the Awakened True Fart Fist. In his corrupted demonic state, he wields the Dark Fist of the Back Wind, which grants him even greater destructive capabilities but at the cost of his sanity and personality.
