Description
Hatenko is a major character from the anime, recognizable for his tall, lean physique standing at 189 cm, with blonde hair and orange eyes. His typical attire consists of black pants, a red shirt, and a distinctive scarf that he wears constantly regardless of the weather. He is a human survivor from the Hair Kingdom, where he grew up alongside Bo-bobo and his siblings. His name itself means unprecedented, a fitting label for his unpredictable nature.

Initially, Hatenko presents himself as one of the more level-headed and laid-back members of the cast. He carries a smug demeanor, rarely viewing opponents as a true challenge unless they prove otherwise. This calm exterior, however, is shattered by his overwhelming and comedic obsession with the character Don Patch. Whenever Don Patch is present, Hatenko transforms into an ecstatic fanboy, believing his boss to be invincible and every action he takes worthy of adoration. This obsession often blinds him to his other objectives, making his allegiances difficult to pin down.

Hatenko is an enigmatic figure whose loyalty shifts between several factions. His true and primary allegiance lies with his homeland, the Hair Kingdom, acting as an emissary for Bo-bobo's older sister, Bu-bubu. His mission is to find Bo-bobo and bring him back to save their home. At the same time, he is a devoted member of the Hajikegumi (the Wiggin Gang), driven by his reverence for Don Patch. There are also instances where the Maruhage Empire forces him into service. He was once coerced into luring Bo-bobo into a trap due to a deadly curse mark, the Kill Seal, placed on him by the agent Torpedo Girl, also known as OVER.

In the story, Hatenko first appears as a lone operative who has already destroyed a Hair Hunt block. He joins Bo-bobo's group, though he behaves more like a double agent, leading the team into dangerous traps. This duplicitous behavior is later explained by his search for a way to remove the Kill Seal from his body. After the seal is broken, he becomes a more consistent ally, joining the fight against the Former Maruhage Empire and later the Reverse Maruhage Empire. He continues his rebellion and eventually reveals his true mission to Bo-bobo, returning with him to the Hair Kingdom to confront his brothers. Though seemingly killed in the final battle, he returns as a ghost to assist Bo-bobo before being revived.

His key relationships include his childhood friendship with Bo-bobo and his brother Be-bebe. His most defining relationship is with Don Patch, whom he treats as a godlike figure, and Torpedo Girl, whose unwanted affections led to him being cursed and blasted across a desert. Over the course of the series, Hatenko experiences significant development, particularly in the sequel series Shinsetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, where he returns as a student of Torpedo Girl, showing increased power and an even more exaggerated obsession with Don Patch that causes him to shrink into a super-deformed form when excited.

Hatenko possesses a unique fighting style known as the Kagi Shinken, or Fist of the Key. His primary ability involves locking his opponents bodies, effectively freezing them in place. He can also use explosive keys for attacks. His most notable power is the ability to access a dimension called Hatenko World, where the true potential of his comrades is stored. By unlocking these inner potentials, he can grant his allies immense power for a limited time of approximately two seconds. He can also unlock his own true potential, transforming into a more powerful form wielding a massive key-sword. In later appearances, his key-based abilities expand to include controlling the bodies of those he has locked and inflicting burning damage.
