Description
Gasser, known in the original Japanese version as Heppokomaru, is a teenage member of the rebel group fighting against the tyranny of the Hair Hunt Empire. He is a quiet and sensible young man who often serves as a grounding presence next to the more chaotic and nonsensical personalities of his companions. Despite his relatively calm demeanor, he is not immune to the absurdity around him and frequently finds himself shocked or exasperated by the bizarre antics of his allies, a trait he shares with his friend Beauty.
Physically, Gasser is a short and slender adolescent. He has short, spiky white hair with bangs and yellow or gold-colored eyes, and he is often depicted wearing gold earrings. In the English version, he stands at approximately 161 centimeters, or five feet three inches, tall. A distinctive feature is the collar he always wears around his neck; this accessory serves to regulate his immense power, and its removal dramatically increases his abilities but reverts his personality to that of an infant.
His background is rooted in tragedy and a desire for revenge. His hometown, PuuPuu City, was destroyed by Captain Battleship and the forces of the Hair Hunt, an event that set him on his path. Following this destruction, he began secretly observing and following the main protagonist, Bobobo, hoping that he would eventually be able to get his revenge. He officially joined the team after intervening to save Beauty from the C-Block Base. Even as a member of the team, Gasser is not a primary combatant; he is often seen observing rather than directly engaging in major battles, though he will not hesitate to throw a punch when necessary.
Gasser's personality is defined by his role as a straight man in a world of pure nonsense. He is one of the more level-headed members of the group and admires Bobobo from the sidelines, respectfully referring to him as Mr. Bobobo. While he is often the voice of reason, he has also been known to occasionally join in on the team's bizarre behavior or act oddly on his own, showing that they have rubbed off on him to some extent. His relationships with other members of the group are varied and significant for his development. He shares a quiet, unspoken romantic connection with Beauty, for whom he harbors strong feelings, though he never dares to tell her. He is protective of her, and she returns his affection, often calling him by the nickname He-kun or Gas-Can. Throughout the series, he saves her on multiple occasions, and their mutual affection is a recurring, if subtle, thread in the narrative. His relationship with Don Patch is notably poor, as Don Patch harbors a strong hatred for him, a conflict that originated when Gasser once insulted the nature of their show. In contrast, he is friends with the jelly-based warrior Jelly Jiggler, often showing concern for his well-being.
Over the course of the series, Gasser undergoes several significant changes and moments of development. In the sequel series, Shinsetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, he is convinced by his sister, Pokomi, that Bobobo's team is evil, leading him to become the commander of the Neo A-Block Base. After being defeated, he rejoins the group following a grueling and nightmarish training session. His power and character are also directly linked to his special collar. When this collar is removed, his abilities, known as the Fist of the Backwind, go out of control, and he enters a powerful "baby" state where he acts like a tantrum-throwing infant, often with a rose in his mouth.
Gasser's primary martial art is Onara Shinken, which translates to the True Fist of Flatulence. In the English adaptation, this is referred to as the Fist of the Backwind. This unorthodox fighting style allows him to generate powerful gas-based attacks. The collar he wears is crucial for keeping this power regulated. Notably, if he loses his collar, he not only becomes incredibly powerful but also begins to act like an infant, demonstrating a direct link between his power regulation and his mental state.
