Description
Hatenkou, also known as Hatenko, is a major character from the anime and manga series Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo who first appears in chapter forty-nine of the manga and episode twenty-one of the anime. He is a young man of twenty-four years old during the first part of the story, standing at 189 centimeters tall and weighing 65 kilograms. His most distinctive visual traits are his yellow hair and orange eyes. He typically wears black pants and a red shirt with the word Hajikegumi written on the back, but his most consistent accessory is a scarf that he wears constantly, regardless of the weather. His demeanor often appears laid-back and smug, and he rarely sees opponents as a significant challenge unless they prove to be a genuine threat.
Hatenkou's background is rooted in the Hair Kingdom, where he grew up and was a childhood friend of the protagonist Bo-bobo, as well as the characters Be-bebe and Gunkan. Following the invasion of the Hair Kingdom by the Maruhage Empire, he allied himself with Bububu-bu Bu-bubu, Bo-bobo's older sister, to protect their home from the ruler Bi-bibi. Bu-bubu eventually sent Hatenkou into the Maruhage Empire to search for her younger brother, believing Bo-bobo was the key to defeating Bi-bibi.
During his time in the empire, Hatenkou operated as a solo rebel, single-handedly taking down various Hair Hunt blocks, including the J-Block base he had infiltrated. At some point, he encountered Torpedo Girl, who became infatuated with him and placed a curse mark on him as a declaration of her love, which was in fact a Kill Seal connected to her other identity as OVER. When Hatenkou tried to fight back, he was blasted into a desert where he lost consciousness. He was found there by KoPatches and brought before Don Patch, who was calmly frying himself in a pan. Hatenkou was so deeply inspired by Don Patch's inexplicable composure that he immediately became a devoted member of Don Patch's Hajikegumi gang.
While Hatenkou initially appears to be one of the more level-headed characters in a series defined by absurdity, his defining personality trait is his profound obsession with Don Patch. Whenever his idol is present, Hatenkou enters a fanatical state, believing Don Patch to be invincible and every action he takes to be worthy of admiration. This devotion often blinds him to his true mission and objectives. The only exception to this behavior occurs when he is engaged in a serious fight. Aside from this intense fandom, Hatenkou is highly enigmatic, with his true loyalties shifting between the rebel cause, the Hajikegumi, and his original mission as an emissary of the Hair Kingdom. He sometimes allows the Maruhage Empire to manipulate him, such as when he lured Bo-bobo and his friends into the Evil Blood Mansion death trap because OVER's Kill Seal threatened his life. When confronted about his double-agent behavior, he simply stated that he did not care which side won.
In the story, Hatenkou initially joins Bo-bobo's group after being delighted to discover that Don Patch is traveling with them. However, his role is often that of a mysterious figure whose ambiguous actions keep other characters guessing about his true intentions. After the destruction of Z-Block, he left the group under the pretense of migrating with his family to find food at baseball stadiums, but he was actually searching for a way to remove the curse mark on him. Once Bo-bobo defeated OVER, the mark disappeared, and Hatenkou later rejoined the rebels. During the New Emperor Playoffs, he became one of the twelve finalists, demonstrating his considerable strength. When the Reverse Maruhage Empire attacked, he fought alongside his comrades against the enemy LOVE, and his unique abilities proved crucial to their victory. Towards the climax of the first part of the series, Hatenkou finally revealed his true mission to Bo-bobo: returning to the Hair Kingdom to stop Bo-bobo's evil brothers. Although he appeared to be killed in the final battle, he was later revived and chose to journey into outer space to continue his search for one of Bo-bobo's brothers, Ba-baba. In the sequel series, Shinsetsu Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, he returns after training with Torpedo Girl, now wearing a white coat over his shirt.
Hatenkou wields the Kagi Shinken, or Fist of the Key. His primary ability involves using keys to lock his opponents bodies, freezing them in place with techniques such as LOCK, which inserts a small key into an enemy's heart, and Eternal Lock, which paralyzes a target for a lifetime. He can also make locking more painful by adding a burning effect and can even control the bodies of those he has locked. His most notable power is Hatenko World, a special domain where the true potential of his comrades is stored. By unlocking certain locks, he can temporarily grant them immense power, though this boost lasts only two seconds. He can similarly unlock his own true potential, transforming into a form with spiky hair and wielding a massive key-sword. After his training with Torpedo Girl in the sequel series, he carries numerous keys connected by a ring and gains the ability to unlock his full potential without needing to enter Hatenko World.
