Description
Akira Maeda is a student at Cromartie High School and a member of Takashi Kamiyama's close circle of friends. He is a formidable delinquent with a genuine claim to strength, asserting that he has never lost a fight, including one where he was outnumbered five to one. Despite his fighting prowess, Maeda is paradoxically one of the most disrespected and overlooked students in the school. The primary reason for this lack of status is his most unfortunate deficiency for a delinquent: he does not have a tough or memorable nickname. This single shortcoming overshadows his actual combat ability, leading his peers to ignore him.

In terms of personality, Maeda functions as the reluctant straight man of the group. Surrounded by the bizarre and inexplicable, such as a gorilla, a silent robot, and a man resembling Freddie Mercury, Maeda is often the only character to point out the sheer absurdity of their situation. He possesses the most common sense and conservative demeanor among Kamiyama's friends, which makes him the default voice of reason in a world devoid of it. He would prefer to solve problems with his fists, but his role is almost exclusively limited to verbal berating and exasperated commentary. Despite his tough and masculine appearance, he is noted to be much shyer than he lets on and becomes flustered when his home life is invaded.

Maeda's role in the story is that of the long-suffering normal friend. He is frequently the victim of gags and unfortunate circumstances. For instance, he is often kidnapped by students from the rival Bass High School for no apparent reason. Furthermore, the group almost always decides to hold their meetings at Maeda's house without asking his permission, a fact that deeply annoys him as they typically leave a mess or break his belongings. A notable exception occurs when they throw him a surprise birthday party, which makes him genuinely happy, even though it was not actually his birthday. He is also very close with his family, bearing a striking and identical resemblance to his mother, a fact that horrifies others and leads to her frequently being mistaken for him.

One of Maeda's key character motivations is his desire for recognition. Frustrated by his lack of a nickname, he eventually attempts to create his own, calling himself the Dragon of Razors. He also tries to bestow the nickname The American Dream on a friend, later admitting he wanted that name for himself. However, this effort fails entirely, as no one else in the school ever acknowledges or uses his chosen moniker. Regarding his abilities, beyond his stated strength in physical combat, Maeda does not possess any outlandish skills. His primary talent is his resilience in enduring the chaos around him and his ability to express mundane frustration in an extraordinary environment.
