Description
Noboru Yamaguchi is a supporting character from the anime Cromartie High School who serves as the leader of the first-year students at Destrade High School, the rival institution to Cromartie. He is also the head of a biker gang whose name varies across adaptations but consistently parodies the band Earth, Wind and Fire. Yamaguchi is known by the nickname The Unsinkable Battleship, an alias that coincidentally matches the moniker of professional wrestler Stan Hansen, who is highly popular in Japan. He is a sixteen-year-old male with black hair and black eyes.

Yamaguchi carries himself with a serious and imposing demeanor, which leads his underlings to believe that he despises jokes. In reality, he possesses a refined appreciation for sophisticated humor and looks down on the crude, lowbrow comedy preferred by his friends. His stern exterior masks a deeper interest in quality comedy, and he interprets the actions of those around him as attempts at humor, viewing nearly everyone as a comedic rival. This internal contradiction between his fearsome reputation and his actual personality is a defining trait.

His primary motivation appears to be maintaining his status as a respected leader while quietly indulging his own tastes. He is driven by a desire to be understood on his own terms, though he rarely expresses this directly. As the leader of Destrade High's first-year class, he frequently comes into contact with the students of Cromartie High, often finding himself exasperated by their absurd behavior. Despite his tough image, he is not malicious and engages with others from a position of authority mixed with bafflement.

Yamaguchi shares a notably rough but genuine friendship with a student named Jun. Though he initially seems to resent Jun for his juvenile sense of humor, their relationship develops into a grudging mutual respect. Beyond this, he regards everyone he encounters as a potential comedic opponent, measuring their actions against his own standards of wit.

Over the course of the story, Yamaguchi experiences little overt character development, remaining consistent in his role as the straight-laced foil to the chaos around him. However, his hidden appreciation for comedy adds a layer of depth that prevents him from being a simple tough guy. His notable abilities lie not in physical combat or special skills, but in his unwavering seriousness and his capacity to perceive the world through the lens of comedic theory, making him a uniquely perceptive figure in a setting defined by absurdity.
