Description
Masato Yamanobe is the central protagonist of the Future chapter of Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix, a story set in the year 3404 on a dying Earth. In this era, humanity has retreated into five underground city-states managed by massive electronic brains, and the planet’s surface has become a barren wasteland. Masato is a young man who holds the rank of Class 2 space warrior in Megalopolis Yamato, one of those subterranean cities. He is presented as a straightforward, clean-cut, and generally innocent individual, though he is also fallible and somewhat ordinary in his ambitions. Unlike the power-hungry or philosophically inclined figures around him, Masato is not deeply interested in the larger political struggles or existential questions of his time; his primary desire is to live a quiet, peaceful life with the woman he loves.

That woman is Tamami, a shapeshifting alien being originally known as a Moopie. Tamami has taken on a human form, and Masato is harboring her, which puts him at odds with the authorities. His boss, a man named Rock, pursues them aggressively, forcing Masato and Tamami to flee across the deserted surface of the world. Their escape leads them to the isolated dome of Dr. Saruta, a scientist who is attempting to recreate extinct life forms with the help of his robot assistant, Robita. Masato’s motivation throughout the first part of the story is simple and personal: he wants to protect Tamami and keep her safe from those who would use or destroy her.

As events unfold, the computer systems governing the underground cities initiate a nuclear war that wipes out all of humanity. In the aftermath, the mythical Phoenix appears to Masato and entrusts him with a monumental task: to become the last surviving human being and oversee the revival of life on Earth. Reluctantly, he accepts this burden. The Phoenix grants him an immortal body, and he is left alone on the planet for billions of years, witnessing the slow, gradual return of life from single-celled organisms to complex creatures. This role transforms him from a simple man seeking a private happiness into a cosmic caretaker and a living witness to the entire cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

Masato’s key relationships define his journey. His bond with Tamami is the emotional core of his early actions, and her loss is a profound turning point. His conflict with Rock, his superior, represents the oppressive authority of a dying civilization. Dr. Saruta serves as a mentor figure, a scientist who has already dedicated himself to preserving life, while the Phoenix itself is not a character Masato interacts with as an equal but rather a transcendent force that selects him for a fate he did not choose. The Phoenix’s choice may appear arbitrary, as Masato is neither the wisest nor the most ambitious person, but it underscores the story’s theme that ordinary individuals can be called upon to carry extraordinary responsibilities.

Over the course of the story, Masato develops from a somewhat naive and self-focused young man into a being of immense patience and profound understanding. His immortality forces him to confront loneliness, the passage of eons, and the beauty of life emerging anew. His notable ability is this very immortality, a gift from the Phoenix that allows him to endure far beyond the natural human lifespan. Combined with his background as a space warrior, he possesses basic combat training, but his defining strength is his resilience and his gradual acceptance of a role he never sought. His character embodies Phoenix’s central themes of renewal, the weight of survival, and the idea that immortality can be a lonely responsibility rather than a reward.
