TV-Series
Description
Hansuke Doi is the homeroom and theory teacher for the first-year Ha class at the Ninjutsu Academy. He is 25 years old, stands approximately 175 centimeters tall, and was born in the Fukuhara area, which is present-day Kobe. As the advisor for the academy's Explosives Committee, his expertise lies in the theoretical aspects of ninjutsu, including strategy, military tactics, and the use of gunpowder and explosives.
Despite his extensive knowledge, Doi often claims to lack confidence in his practical skills. However, this is contradicted by his remarkable ability to use ordinary classroom objects as highly effective weapons. He is famous for his near-perfect aim with chalk, and he has been known to defeat enemies using nothing more than a blackboard eraser, an attendance book, and a chalk case, all without a moment's hesitation. While he serves as the advisor for the Explosives Committee, he has also been known to make mistakes, such as incorrectly mixing the gunpowder for a shell. His skills as a ninja are of a high order, leading to him being scouted by various castles, an honor he consistently declines as he has no intention of leaving his position at the academy.
Personality-wise, Doi is characterized by his kind and good-natured demeanor, but he also possesses a strict side and is known to become very angry when his students are involved in serious accidents. His class, 1 Ha, which includes the main characters Rantarou, Kirimaru, and Shinbei, is famously troublesome, prone to forgetfulness, and constantly causing chaos. This situation is a constant source of worry for Doi, leading to frequent stress-induced stomachaches and headaches. He is easily frustrated by his students' inability to remember the theory he teaches them, but he is also fiercely protective and does not tolerate anyone else looking down on them or speaking ill of them. This protective nature puts him at odds with teachers like Andou, who is known for his dismissive attitude toward the first-year Ha class. He has a childish side as well, most notably his extreme and irrational hatred for processed fish-paste products like kamaboko, a dislike he shares with the manga's author.
Doi's personal life is intertwined with his professional one. His most significant relationship is with his student, Kirimaru Settsuno. Because Kirimaru has no family and would have nowhere to go during school holidays, Doi invites him to stay at his rented house in the town. Their relationship has become almost familial, with Doi often helping Kirimaru with his various part-time jobs, which have included babysitting and selling food. This bond is rooted in mutual experience, as Doi himself lost his parents and home in a war when he was young, leaving him with nothing. This shared background is the unspoken reason he feels so compelled to care for Kirimaru. He is also close to his colleague, the ninjutsu teacher Denzou Yamada. Years before becoming a teacher, Doi was injured during a mission and fell near the Yamada family's picnic spot. Denzou protected him and his family treated his wounds, an event that forged a lasting bond between them. He also has a friendly relationship with Kouji Makaino, a teacher from a rival faction, and the two are willing to help each other when it comes to their students' education. His persistent rival is Sonnamon Moroizumi, a ninja from the Tasogaredoki group who constantly challenges him after being easily defeated by Doi's unconventional school-supply attacks.
Throughout the series, Doi has served as a central figure in more serious storylines, demonstrating his importance to the narrative. He was brainwashed by the Dokutake ninja corps and took on a different persona known as Tenki before eventually recovering his memories and returning to his students. The feature film released in December 2024 places him at the center of the plot, where he goes missing and the entire academy, from his first-year students to the reliable sixth-year class, works together to find him. This film highlights how the characters are not just dependent on him, but that he also needs them, emphasizing the reciprocal nature of his relationships with everyone from Kirimaru to the sixth-year students and his fellow teachers.
