Description
Hemu Hemu is a ninja dog and a central mascot character who resides at the Ninjutsu Academy. He is most recognizable as the constant companion of the academy's Headmaster. A light yellow dog with oval eyes, a notably red nose, whiskers, and two flat ears, he typically wears a blue ninja hood. Without this hood, a small tuft of hair is visible on his forehead.
As a ninja dog trained by the Headmaster himself, Hemu Hemu possesses intelligence and abilities that often surpass those of the human ninja trainees around him. He is highly efficient in all his duties, possesses great physical strength, and is a skilled ninja in his own right. Despite only ever vocalizing the words hemu hemu, everyone in the series seems to understand him perfectly. In his daily life, he has largely abandoned walking on all fours, preferring to move and act in a human-like, bipedal manner.
His primary role at the academy involves performing various administrative and support tasks. He frequently acts as a stand-in secretary for the school, handling paperwork and chores alongside the human secretary, Komatsuda Shuusaku. He is also responsible for ringing the large bell to signal the start of lunch and break times, a task he performs by striking it with his head, demonstrating its notable hardness. However, he can occasionally be seen wandering off or failing to ring the bell on time when feeling tired or unwell.
The most significant relationship in his life is with the Headmaster. The two are inseparable friends who do everything together. Their bond originated years ago when the Headmaster, then an active ninja, was being chased by soldiers during a mission. The Headmaster found Hemu Hemu as a small puppy, who at the time had a normal, loud bark that nearly gave away their position. To remain together, the Headmaster told the puppy he needed to change the sound of his cry. The dog then trained himself in isolation to modify his bark, eventually transforming it from a standard dog cry into the distinctive hemu hemu sound used in the present.
This origin story explains his unique vocalization and underscores his deep loyalty and dedication. Despite his competence, this particular cry has proven to be a double-edged sword; it is so soft and gentle that even if a thief breaks into the school at night, no one is woken by his alarm. On one occasion, the Headmaster scolded him for this, leading Hemu Hemu to struggle in an attempt to change his cry back to a standard bark. Seeing his companion’s distress, the Headmaster recalled their first meeting and ultimately apologized, accepting Hemu Hemu as he is.
In his role within the academy, Hemu Hemu has a friendly but competitive dynamic with Komatsuda Shuusaku. Before Komatsuda was hired as the official secretary, Hemu Hemu performed many of those duties himself. Even now, the two occasionally compete with each other to prove who is more capable. Hemu Hemu's abilities extend far beyond clerical work and bell-ringing; he is also proficient in strategic board games such as go and shogi. He is a regular fixture in nearly every episode, serving as a background character, a reliable problem-solver, and a beloved mascot for the academy.
