Description
Kyohei Tachibana is a culinary arts college student in the near-future Tokyo of Burst Angel. His background is rooted in a peaceful, focused ambition: he dreams of traveling to France to train and eventually establish himself as a patissier. To fund this goal, he answers a part-time job posting at his school, which leads him to become the personal cook for a household of four young women who turn out to be mercenaries working for an international organization. His introduction to the story is accidental and chaotic; while riding his motor scooter through the city, he gets caught in a shootout between a silver-haired woman and a gangster, an event that propels him into the violent world he would otherwise have avoided.

His personality is grounded and good-natured. Rather than seeking action or conflict, Kyohei is a hardworking and dedicated cook who prefers the order of the kitchen to the disorder of gunfights. He is earnest, occasionally flustered by the dangerous antics around him, but never loses his core decency. Throughout the series he remains a civilian at heart, reacting to extreme situations with a mix of alarm and gradually acquired nerve, yet he consistently demonstrates loyalty to the people who have taken him in.

Kyohei’s primary motivation is to save enough money to continue his culinary education in France. This practical dream is what keeps him in the bizarre and risky environment of the mercenary group. Over time, his reasons for staying deepen; he develops genuine care for Sei, Jo, Meg, and Amy, and a sense of belonging that goes beyond his original paycheck. Even when his personal safety is compromised, his commitment to the group solidifies.

In the story, Kyohei serves as the cook and a grounding presence within the team. He is not a fighter; his role is domestic and supportive, providing the daily comfort of meals that keeps the mercenaries functioning. This gives him a unique position as a non-combatant who witnesses their dangerous missions, worry about their safety, and sometimes gets inadvertently drawn into peril. His presence offers a contrast to the high-octane mecha battles and gunfights, reminding the viewer of the human, everyday concerns that exist alongside the chaos.

His key relationships are with the four mercenaries. Sei, the team’s leader, hires him and often treats him with a mix of teasing amusement and reliance. Jo, the silent and lethal sniper, shares an unspoken bond with him through quiet moments and the respect each holds for the other’s skill in their respective fields. Meg, the mechanic with a brash personality, and Amy, the young computer expert, both treat him as a dependable older-brother figure, and he becomes protective of them. The dynamic is familial, with Kyohei acting as the steady, nurturing center.

Development for Kyohei is subtle but meaningful. He starts as a wide-eyed student entirely out of his depth, focusing only on his French pastry dream. As the series progresses, he adapts to the dangerous reality around him, growing more courageous and resourceful without losing his culinary passion or his fundamental gentleness. He learns to stand firm even when terrified, and his loyalty to his companions becomes the anchor of his actions, moving him beyond the simple pursuit of tuition money.

His most notable ability is his culinary proficiency. He is skilled in Chinese, French, and Japanese cooking, and his food is both a professional craft and a way of expressing care. This talent is what earns him a place in the team and makes him valuable beyond any combat capability. While he does not possess fighting skills, his resilience and emotional reliability become assets in their own right, solidifying his role as the heart of the makeshift family.
