Description
Bonnon is a spirit who appears as the antagonist in the anime special Sailor Moon SuperS Plus - Ami's First Love. Her species is classified as a genius loci, a type of spirit tied to a specific location or the embodiment of a place's essence. In both the anime and the original manga side story, she is a non-aligned evil entity, meaning she does not serve any greater villainous organization but acts on her own instincts. Her name has appeared in various English adaptations, sometimes as Bonnone or even D. Zire.
Within the story, Bonnon has a clearly defined motivation. She is drawn to and feeds on the intense passions and desires of humans. She becomes interested in the character Ami Mizuno, also known as Sailor Mercury, after sensing the strong emotions Ami is experiencing. At this time, Ami is studying obsessively for her high school entrance exams and has become fixated on a mysterious academic rival who calls himself Mercurius. Bonnon observes Ami from a distance, such as from the rooftop of the prep school Ami attends, and mistakenly interprets Ami's single-minded focus on her rival as romantic love. Believing that Ami is in love, Bonnon decides to prey upon these powerful feelings to feed herself.
Bonnon's role in the special is that of a singular, self-serving antagonist. She does not have any allies or master plan beyond her own sustenance. She stalks Ami as the girl walks home, enveloping her in a lilac mist to make her feel ill and vulnerable. Once Ami is lying in her bed, feverish and exhausted from insomnia, Bonnon launches her primary attack. This ability, known as the Love Letter Attack, is designed to drain Ami of all the knowledge she has painstakingly memorized for her exams. Bubbles containing the information rise from Ami's head and begin to pop, causing her to forget everything she has learned. The attack represents the core conflict of the special, as it threatens to destroy what Ami values most: her intellect and academic prowess.
In terms of key relationships, Bonnon has a purely parasitic one with Ami Mizuno. She is drawn to Ami's passion and seeks to consume it for her own benefit. Interestingly, Bonnon never successfully reveals her true identity to her victim. When she appears in Ami's room, a delirious Ami, weakened by fever and the memory-draining attack, mistakes the spirit for her rival Mercurius. Bonnon tries to correct this misunderstanding, insisting that she is not Mercurius, but Ami is too far gone to listen. Ami transforms into Sailor Mercury and attacks, believing she is finally defeating the academic rival who has been tormenting her. Sailor Mercury destroys Bonnon with her attack Mercury Aqua Mirage, all while still convinced the spirit was Mercurius.
Bonnon does not undergo any character development, as she appears only once and is destroyed in her first and only confrontation with the Sailor Guardians. She is a monster-of-the-week type character, created to serve a specific narrative purpose within a single story. Her notable abilities include her spiritual nature, allowing her to appear and disappear as a glowing red face in a lilac mist, and her signature Love Letter Attack, which manifests as bubbles that erase knowledge. She can also create illusions or alter perceptions, as shown when the floor of Ami's apartment appears to disappear to hinder her friends from intervening. Bonnon is notable within the larger franchise for being the only genius loci spirit to appear in the anime.
