Description
Gary Oak is a character who first appears as a young Pokémon trainer from the town of Pallet Town. He is the grandson of the renowned Professor Samuel Oak, a position that initially grants him significant confidence and a sense of superiority over his peers, particularly his lifelong neighbor and rival, Ash Ketchum.

At the outset of his journey, Gary's personality is marked by a high degree of arrogance and boastfulness. He is deeply proud of his knowledge about Pokémon, which he believes is superior because of his grandfather's expertise, and he is not hesitant to display it, often at Ash's expense. This youthful hubris is reflected in his actions, such as traveling in a luxurious red car accompanied by a group of cheering female supporters and even going so far as to write graffiti mocking Ash. His primary motivation in these early days is to prove himself as the superior trainer, and his main benchmark for this success is his rivalry with Ash.

Gary's role in the larger story evolves significantly. Initially presented as a formidable and constant rival who always seems to be one step ahead, he serves as a major driving force for Ash to improve. However, a significant turning point occurs at the Indigo Plateau Pokémon League, where Gary suffers an unexpected and crushing defeat, finishing behind Ash in the competition. This loss is a humbling experience that begins to soften his abrasive personality. The rivalry between the two reaches its climax at the Silver Conference in the Johto region, where Ash finally defeats Gary in a full battle.

It is after this defeat that Gary undergoes his most profound development. He makes the pivotal decision to retire from his goal of being a Pokémon trainer and instead dedicates himself to becoming a Pokémon researcher, following in the footsteps of his grandfather. This career change redefines his character, and his appearances in Pokémon Chronicles and subsequent series show him studying various Pokémon in different regions, including prehistoric Pokémon.

His key relationships also evolve. His grandfather, Professor Oak, remains a central figure, and Gary's later work as a researcher brings them closer together professionally. The relationship with Ash transforms from one of intense, often petty, rivalry to a mutual respect and friendship. As Gary matures, he becomes more supportive and offers Ash sincere encouragement, such as when he motivates him to continue his journey after a loss. He also develops a working relationship with other professors, such as Professor Rowan in the Sinnoh region.

In terms of abilities, Gary is consistently portrayed as a highly skilled and knowledgeable trainer. He started his journey with Squirtle, which eventually evolves all the way to a powerful Blastoise, his signature Pokémon. He is shown to possess a great number of Pokémon, with his grandfather once noting he has over two hundred, demonstrating his initial dedication to catching many species. His battle style is characterized by powerful, often ground and fire-type Pokémon, such as Arcanine, Nidoking, and later Electivire, and he is a calm and strategic thinker in battle. Even after becoming a researcher, he retains his battle skills, using them to defend rare Pokémon from threats like the Pokémon Hunter J. Ultimately, Gary Oak is a character who begins as an arrogant rival but matures into a thoughtful and dedicated researcher, demonstrating a significant and believable journey of personal growth.
