TV-Series
Description
Professor Elm, known in Japanese as Dr. Utsugi, is the Pokémon Professor of the Johto region and works from his laboratory in New Bark Town. He was originally a student of Professor Oak before becoming a renowned researcher in his own right. His main fields of study are Pokémon breeding and reproduction, and he is credited with the discovery of Pokémon Eggs. He is also deeply interested in how Pokémon evolve and in the unusual abilities that individual Pokémon can possess, and he is considered exceptionally knowledgeable in the research of Pokémon evolution.

In appearance, Professor Elm is a middle-aged man with short brown hair and gray eyes, and he is usually seen wearing glasses and a white lab coat over a collared teal shirt. He lives in New Bark Town with his wife and young son, who hopes to grow up to become a Pokémon Professor like his father, and he has an aide who assists him in his laboratory.

By nature, Professor Elm is absent-minded in the way of a dedicated researcher. He becomes so absorbed in his work that he can lose track of his surroundings, and he has a tendency to go off on tangents about his research when speaking with others. When he meets with his former mentor Professor Oak, he enjoys explaining his theories and discoveries, and the two sometimes argue over research matters. Beneath this distracted exterior, he is a kind and approachable person who makes friends easily, and he genuinely cares about the well-being of the trainers and Pokémon he works with.

His primary motivation is scientific curiosity, especially the desire to understand how Pokémon breed, evolve, and use their abilities, along with a commitment to supporting the young trainers of Johto as they begin their journeys. In the Pokémon Chronicles animated specials, particularly in the story centered on the legendary Pokémon Raikou, Professor Elm plays an important supporting role. He gives starter Pokémon to the young trainers of New Bark Town, providing Cyndaquil to Jimmy, Totodile to Marina, and Chikorita to Vincent, and he continues to offer them guidance as their journey unfolds.

Within that story, Professor Elm becomes involved in investigating strange electromagnetic activity connected to Raikou. He warns the main characters about Team Rocket's interference and stresses the importance of protecting the legendary Pokémon. At a key moment, Marina contacts him to report that the group has encountered Raikou, and he advises that the injured legendary Pokémon would not recover properly inside a Pokémon Center and would need other forms of treatment. His research and judgment therefore help shape how the characters understand and respond to the conflict around them.

In terms of relationships, Professor Elm is particularly close to the trio of trainers he mentors, and he serves as a trusted source of knowledge and reassurance for them. His bond with Professor Oak reflects a mentor-student history that has matured into a friendly collegial relationship, even when the two disagree about science. As a researcher, Professor Elm is regarded as one of the most accomplished professors in the Pokémon world and serves as the head of the Pokémon Preservation Council. He also keeps Pokémon of his own, including a Corsola he obtained in the Whirl Islands, which has shown itself to be a capable swimmer and battler. Within the Chronicles specials, his involvement moves from detached research to direct concern for the safety of both the legendary Pokémon and the young trainers he advises, and his work and guidance consistently reflect a belief in the connection between people and Pokémon.
