Description
Kojiro, known in English as James, is a member of Team Rocket and appears in the anime series Pokémon Chronicles. He was born into extreme wealth and sheltered upbringing, but he fled his family home to escape an arranged marriage with the overbearing Jessiebelle, leaving behind his childhood Growlithe, Growlie. After failing at Pokémon Tech, he briefly joined a bicycle gang and eventually entered Team Rocket, where he was paired with Jessie and Meowth. The trio follow Ash Ketchum with the aim of stealing his Pikachu, though they repeatedly fail.
Kojiro is kind-hearted, gentle, and compassionate, particularly toward Pokémon. Unlike typical villains, he shows moral hesitation and places the welfare of his Pokémon above strict orders. He can be melodramatic, naive, and sometimes cowardly, but he is also inventive and mechanically adept, often designing and piloting the group's machines. His flamboyant side emerges through frequent cross-dressing and a theatrical delivery of Team Rocket's motto.
His primary motive is finding freedom from a stifling past and belonging within Team Rocket, but he also genuinely enjoys the pursuit of rare Pokémon and craves approval from his boss, Giovanni. In Pokémon Chronicles, his role is that of a comedic antagonist who occasionally aids the heroes when facing a greater threat. The series explores his early history in the episode Training Daze, showing his clumsy start as a Team Rocket trainee.
His key relationships are with his partners Jessie and Meowth, with whom he shares a loyal if bickering bond. He also forms deep attachments to his Pokémon, including Weezing, Victreebel, Cacnea, Chimecho, and later Mime Jr. and Mareanie. His childhood connection to Growlie continues to be referenced. He has a rivalry with fellow Team Rocket operatives Butch and Cassidy.
Over the course of Pokémon Chronicles, his personality remains largely consistent, but his background enriches his character. He demonstrates notable abilities: mechanical aptitude, surprising skill in Pokémon Contests (winning a ribbon while disguised as Jessie), excellent endurance, and an encyclopedic knowledge of Pokémon. He also collects bottle caps, a hobby that highlights his sentimental nature.
