Description
Nyarth, known in English-language versions as Meowth, is the talking Meowth who accompanies the Team Rocket members Jessie and James. He is a male Meowth with cream-colored fur, a golden coin on his forehead, and the rare ability to walk upright and speak human language, which distinguishes him from nearly all other Pokémon.

His background explains how he became such an unusual Pokémon. He began life as an ordinary stray cat raised on the streets, where he had to survive with little food and endure a harsh existence. After encountering a female Meowth, he fell in love and decided to do whatever it took to win her affection. He taught himself to stand on two legs and to speak human words, an effort that consumed so much of his inner energy that he lost the ability to use the move Pay Day and could no longer evolve into Persian. When the female Meowth still rejected him, he joined the criminal organization Team Rocket, where he became the partner of Jessie and James. In his anime appearances, including the self-contained stories of Pokémon Chronicles, he serves as one of the main recurring antagonists, continually devising plans to capture Pikachu and to gain standing within Team Rocket under its leader, Giovanni.

In personality, Nyarth is talkative, confident, and quick-minded, often acting as the strategist of the Team Rocket trio and inventing their elaborate schemes. He has a talent for persuasion and can be charming when it suits him, yet he is also vain, self-interested, and prone to dreaming large about his own importance. Despite his villainous role, he is not genuinely malicious; he shows real compassion for other Pokémon, sympathizes with those who are mistreated or abandoned, and sometimes steps in to settle conflicts by interpreting between Pokémon and humans, a function he jokes about as being a negotiator. He is cheerful and resilient, bouncing back quickly from repeated defeats, but he also has a sentimental and sensitive side. He takes pleasure in simple things such as good food and the sight of the moon, dislikes getting his paws wet, and is easily moved by the struggles of the creatures he meets.

His motivations shift with his circumstances. As a member of Team Rocket, he wants to prove his worth by stealing rare and powerful Pokémon, especially Pikachu, in the hope of earning recognition from Giovanni. In Pokémon Chronicles, however, he is shown pursuing more personal goals. In one story, he takes a vacation from Team Rocket and dreams of building a golden monument to himself, setting out with a picnic basket to find the right place for his statue. In another, he works a series of odd jobs in a big town to earn money toward his ambitions, revealing a resourceful and independent side that exists apart from his loyalty to the organization.

His key relationships shape much of his behavior. Jessie and James are his closest companions; while they are not his Trainers in a formal sense, the three function as a tight-knit team and share a bond that is occasionally argumentative but ultimately loyal. Giovanni is the boss he serves and longs to impress, and his rivalry with Ash and Pikachu drives most of his scheming. He also carries a romantic streak, having fallen for several female catlike Pokémon over the years, beginning with the Meowth whose rejection changed the course of his life. His interactions with Pokémon such as Smoochum during his Chronicles adventures bring out a gentler side of him when he is away from his usual duties.

Over the course of his appearances, Nyarth develops from a rough street stray into a complex figure who is at once a scheming villain, a devoted comrade, a gifted speaker, and a vulnerable dreamer. His inability to evolve and the loss of his Pay Day move stand as lasting reminders of the sacrifices he made in pursuit of love and status, adding depth to a character who might otherwise be seen as simple comic relief.

His notable abilities include fluent human speech, the capacity to understand and translate the language of other Pokémon, bipedal movement, and the move Fury Swipes, which serves as his main combat technique. He is highly intelligent, skilled at deception and negotiation, and surprisingly capable at ordinary labor, often earning genuine money at part-time jobs when the trio pauses its villainous activities. His cleverness, his way with words, and his persistence define his role in every setting where he appears.
