Description
Leticia, often spelled Laetitia, is a supporting character in the anime Madlax. She is depicted as a mysterious little girl with red hair, green eyes, and a ghostly aura, usually seen carrying a small ragdoll. Her appearance and demeanor suggest a fragile, otherworldly presence, and she is frequently found in the company of Poupee, a boy with yellow hair.
Leticia is the third persona of Margaret Burton, created twelve years before the main events of the story. When Margaret was a child, she was forced to kill her own father after he was driven insane by the antagonist Friday Monday. Unable to bear the guilt of patricide, Margaret split her psyche into three separate personae: one that retained the supernatural Gift and remained innocent of the crime (Margaret herself), one that took on the sin of killing (the mercenary Madlax), and one that held the memories of the traumatic event (Leticia, the memory keeper). As the memory keeper, Leticia is confined to the Sanctuary, a metaphysical realm behind the Door of Truth, and she cannot leave it. Her existence is tied to preserving the truth that Margaret and Madlax have both forgotten.
In terms of personality, Leticia is quiet and enigmatic, reflecting her role as a keeper of hidden knowledge. She does not actively participate in the physical events of the story but instead represents the buried past that must eventually be confronted. Her motivation is not self-directed; she exists as a fragment of Margaret’s original self, waiting for the moment when her memories can be reintegrated.
Leticia’s role in the story is crucial to the resolution. Her existence is revealed late in the series, when Margaret learns the full truth of her past. By fusing with Leticia and Madlax, Margaret is able to undo the destructive ritual that Monday has set in motion. After the climax, Margaret chooses to keep her personae separate, releasing Madlax to live freely and adopting Leticia as her younger sister so that she will not be alone. This act gives Leticia a new purpose outside the Sanctuary—she becomes part of Margaret’s life, no longer merely a ghost of the past.
Leticia’s notable ability is her function as the repository of Margaret’s lost memories. She does not possess combat skills or other overt powers; her significance is psychological and symbolic. She is a living record of the trauma that shapes the entire narrative. Her connection to the Sanctuary and the Holy Books underlines her link to the supernatural elements of the world.
Key relationships include her bond with Margaret, of whom she is a fragment, and her symbolic tie to Poupee, the child form of Carrossea Doon, who was the only other survivor of the plane crash and also died protecting Margaret. In the final episodes, her relationship with Margaret evolves from a hidden persona to a recognized sister, allowing Leticia to step out of isolation and into a new life.
